Teens are going to be fined for smoking in public..

Good idea......

Then they won't be able to afford smokes.

I think they will just get some for friends or steal from their parents. Besides.. The parents are go ing to be the one paying. I think they should do 100 hours of community service.

Since it's illegal for teens (under18) to purchase or possess tobacco, a fine is completely reasonable in my opinion.

You could always give them a choice. Pay the fine or turn in the person who sold them the smokes.

Then fine that person to the max.

You're proubably right though. It won't work, but I still like the idea.;)

What about this?

A cop is walking down the street, sees someone smoking a cigarette, they look kinda young to him - so the cop goes over to them. It's a 24 year old male, the dude shows him his ID only after the cop searches and gets the smokes out of his pocket.

Probable cause.

What if the cop finds marijuana in the pocket? Is that a justifiable search and seizure?

The drug war has already caused a number of our rights as indivudals in this society to be curbed - especially our right to privacy.

Not only does this law infringe on the rights of young people to smoke, it will create a situation where they will be disturbed even if they are of age.

This is ridiculous in application although possibly a good idea on thought.

Well I would hope the guy would be smart enough to say his age before he got searched. After saying how old he was I would hope the officer would be smart enough to ask for ID.

If only this were a perfect world.

This type of regulation only leads to infringement on the rights and privacy of others who are not at fault.

I'm not a big fan of smokers in general...but I don't htink it'll work.

It's a good thing that crime is so low in Alberta that the cops have the time to go around checking ID's for underage smokers.

Making smoking a more grownup activity is part of Big Tobacco's strategy. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't help draft this stupid law.

My thinking, too.

4l,
"in a tragic, irresponsible way" lol

People should be notified of the dangers of smoking, then be allowed to do so if they are in a location that does not inhibit the rights of others to breath.

Tax the smokes, let the smokers die.

This is ideal, but I also like the fine idea.

Kids that want to smoke are stupid. Smokers that can't stop I pity.

Stopping teen smoking in public will stop teen smoking .... How?

I agree 100%, smokers should pay for their own medical bills. Problem is that they don't.

Another problem is the lost productivity of smoking related injuries, which amount to billions each year. Add that to the early death statistics and the do gooders will have laws papering the floor of the senate.

The road to hell really is paved with good intentions.
