LAKELAND -- Polk County Sheriff's Office homicide detectives have arrested a suspect in an alleged gang-related shooting that left a Lakeland teenager dead and his younger brother critically injured Saturday afternoon.

According to the Sheriff's Office, at approximately 2:50 p.m. Saturday, suspect Alejandro Baez-Garcia, 18, of 1935 Oakhill St., Lakeland, and four other occupants were riding in a GMC van. All five occupants in the van are in a gang.

Alejandro specifically said, "Let's go find some northsiders," according to a Sheriff's Office report.

The van's driver drove east on West Parker Street where they encountered a bicyclist, Johnathan Rondon. Rondon was wearing the rival gang colors and was on his way to visit the victims, Juan Castillo and his family.

Alejandro told the driver to turn around, according to the Sheriff's Office. The driver made a U-turn and drove back west on West Parker Street. When the van approached 1707 W. Parker St., Alejandro opened the side door and fired multiple rounds from a small-caliber handgun toward the residence, targeting Juan Castillo because of the rival gang colors he was wearing.

Castillo, 19, of 1707 W. Parker St., Lakeland was shot and died at the scene. His 11-year-old brother, Jake Castillo, also was shot and was still in critical condition Sunday afternoon at Tampa General Hospital.

Why no national media coverage? Why no special report from Katie Couric? Does this young man's life not merit any coverage?

I for one would like to express my heartfelt sympathies to the victim's family.

Hmm.. And nothing from Sharpton or Jackson?

Hey, renard:

Just because his clothing was a certain color doesn't mean that he was a gang member. I've heard about these cases where innocent people whom were not gang members have been gunned down by depraved low lives because the color of their clothes matched that of a rival gang. If you don't want to get shot by gangbanger low lives, stay out of the ghetto, and keep within middle and upper class, predominately white neighborhoods.

If you ride your bicycle in certain parts of LA, and you're wearing a red shirt, you'll get shot by the "crips" for sure.

Because it's a dog-bites-man story. What happened in Tucson on Saturday was a man-bites-dog story.
