Tomas Crane paced his office. He was waiting for his next pupil, the interviews had gone well, all normal kids looking forward to the new session and he had filled his classes. This last pupil however had no information on her in his notes, other than she was new to the town. He had already seen a couple of mature students and the usual intake of teenagers, but he had no idea what to expect here. At six foot tall and of a lithe build, he still showed the evidence of his former physical life, though now it was with a little padding from the comforts of normal life.

He sat down, looking over his desk, the family pictures were there, his paperweight (a gift from his colleagues after he left the army) and a blank sheet. He leaned forward running his fingers through his dark, short cropped hair and adjusting his reading glasses. 'Who are you?' he pondered. Then she knocked the door. He stood, walked to the side of his desk and called "Come on in please"

Abigail Strauss, 18 years old knew she was running late.

This sort of thing happened every time she moved to some place new. It took some time to get adjusted, especially now that she was here. In a different country... but of course, she should be used to it by now.

In all aspects, Abigail was an Army brat. Her family had moved several times in the last few years due to her father's position and rank in the military. And right now, she had no choice in the matter.

It wasn't really a bad life after all. The only thing was that things like today happened... This was going to be her last year in school and with any luck, she would be able to finish it at one location, but of course, she didn't want to get her hopes up.

Checking her notes, she made sure she was at the right door before knocking.

"Come on in please"

As she opened the door, an apology was already out of her mouth, "I am so sorry I'm late sir... I'm Abigail Strauss, recently moved from the US and well, I'm just getting used to things on this side of the country...again..." she added with a smile.

He smiled, "Don't worry, and you're not late. I think we placed you in last because everything is new. So there was no hurry." he offered the chair opposite his desk and returned to sit down, "OK, Abigail, " he smiled "takes some getting used to all this moving about?"

He wrote her name on the form, pausing as he formed the letters Strauss. He'd known a Strauss, back a long time ago, but he couldn't place the name.....

"You would think I should be used to it by now..." she said, smiling as she sat down on the offered seat. She adjusted her school uniform, the skirt was shorter than she thought.

"I bet my name wasn't on what ever roster you had, right?" It was a common thing, something she was used to. "We all just moved here literally a few days ago, so things are still kinda hectic." She folded her hands in front of her, on her lap.

Tomas smiled, "I understand totally, I had to move my family around with my postings, it isn't easy for anybody." he sat back and looked closely at her, Abigail seemed familiar somehow but he couldn't decide why. She was attractive, wearing a skirt that was obviously too short yet it suited her perfectly. He watched her for a moment, then spoke quietly again "So, can you tell me a little about yourself? What are your strengths and weaknesses?"

"About myself?" Abigail repeated as she bit her lip.

What was she to say? She wasn't any one special...at least not in the sense of a celebrity type, "Well, I'm the one and only daughter of General Thomas and Lindsy Strauss, we recently moved here from California...hmmm.... even though I should be attending the school on base, I did get Daddy to break and let me attend off base..." she paused as she made a face while thinking of the next part of his question.

Abigail had never really been through a school interview, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to try to impress, "I would have to say my biggest strength is my willing to adapt to almost any situation and one of my many weaknesses is being shy around new people.." she said, finishing up and looking at Mr. Crane and smiling.

Her smile excited him, it flashed her beauty and he flushed red slightly. "Umm, I think I know your father, he was in charge of a group we did a wargame exercise with some years ago. He beat us but I remember he was incredibly strict and was shouting at his men that it shouldn't have been as close as it was...."

He stood, and walked to sit on the front of his desk, closer to Abigail. "I'm sure you'll be happy here, we try to make everybody welcome, but if I were you I'd find a slightly more appropriate skirt" he smiled.

"So what subjects are you interested in taking? I'd like to try to fit you in where I can."

He looked into her eyes, there was something about this girl, something he was sure he wanted to find out about

With a knowing nod, Abigail smile grew wider, "Oh wow, you might know daddy?" Abigail giggled and leaned forward, "Saying daddy is strict is like saying the sky is blue. He is tough but in all reality..." she made a show of looking around, as if telling Mr. Crane a huge secret, she leaned over toward him, "He's a big softie, especially toward me.."

She felt her cheeks redden at his comment about her skirt as she adjusted it again, "Well, subjects...umm, I like math... I mean, I really like math and of course, history, I would have to say those are my two greatest subjects of mine..." She hoped it didn't sound like she was bragging.

"You say you know Daddy? Would it be too forward to invite you over for dinner one night?"

Tomas laughed, "I'm not sure your father would be interested in me, but thank you for the offer." he walked over to the window peering out and noticing the other pupils beginning to leave, the teachers would do so soon too. "I think you'll fit in well Miss Strauss" he smiled " I teach History as well so we'll see plenty of each other" foe some reason it felt good to be saying that, but at the same time it felt wrong.

"So is there anything you'd like to ask me?"

"Ah well, another time perhaps?" Abigail said as she watched him stand and walk to the window.

"Now that you mention it," she said when he asked her if she had any questions for him, "Tutoring... I am positive I want some extra help with my classes, at least some of them, even if I don't need it, perhaps you can tell me who to speak to specifically?" She asked, her eyes shining bright as she stared him. It was then that Abigail realized what a handsome man Mr. Crane was. He had a certain air about him that she liked and felt comfortable to be around.

He felt her watch him and liked it. He knew he shouldn't but he felt himself stir. " Tutoring.." he said quietly "I'd ask your subject teacher, if its History, I'll happily help. Some other subjects too" he cringed slightly at how that sounded and turned slowly to face her. "Try me, what subjects do you need help in?"

"Well... history of course, just because it is a subject I enjoy so much, also..." she hated to say because she was a bit embarrassed, "...english..."

She straightened up and smiled widely, "That's about all I can think of, I really am a good student, despite having to had move around so much, so don't expect a lot of trouble out of me...besides, as my father says, I have a reputation to keep because of who he is..."

Tomas smiled and turned to face her, "I'm sure you have a good record and I'll bet you do your father proud." he walked closer again, and sat on his desk. "so what periods of history do you like and why?" he leaned closer, confusion building inside. He knew he could let her go now, but he wanted to find out about her, wanted to get to know her better. Inside he laughed, was he under some spell of hers he wondered

Scooting her chair closer to the front of his desk, Abigail sighed happily...asking her what her favorite parts of history were was like asking her to choose a favorite food. "Well, there isn't just one... I would say there are so many but..." she held up a finger and smiled, "If I were forced to.."

She leaned over, propping both elbows on the desk and whispered, as if telling him a great secret, "It would be a tie between the middle ages and Renaissance age... those two...wow!"

he laughed, they were close now and her excitement had loosened her nervousness, her skirt had ridden up a little more, teasing him, and then she propped on his desk, He couldn't resist a glance down her blouse, but felt guilty to do so.

"well I'm sure you'll enjoy some history lessons then" he smiled at her. His heart was racing, he felt the excitement too. "I enjoy the medieval period too, the intrigue of court, the scandals and the simple life style, but we will touch on it quite deeply, on of the subject we have to cover is the role of women, and of course, in those times women were married very young."

He stopped himself there, surely that didn't sound right, he hoped she wouldn't take offence

For some reason, Abigail felt very comfortable talking with Mr. Crane about all this. She usually did hold back when she first met people for the first time but the light in his eyes showed that he did enjoy the subject just as much as she did...

In fact, she didn't hint at the fact that she saw his eyes dart down quickly to the front of her blouse, which was low cut but had been covered by her sweater. Good lord, if her father knew she left the house looking like she did, he would've had a fit about it.

But it didn't bother her, she didn't do it on purpose. She needed the uniform today and it had somehow found it's way through the wrong wash the day before so there was no time to fix it...

"Yes, they did!" she exclaimed at his comment about the women, "In fact, if I were born in those times, I would be married now and have kids..." she shuddered at the thought of having children, she was only 18 for goodness sake, way too early to be considering children, let alone marriage. "That was a time when the subject of sex wasn't even discussed as it is today.." she said, feeling her face redden...

"very True, but its still a taboo now." he smiled. What did he think he was doing! This girl was so young and here he was lusting after her! "I guess you'd have to look further back for liberation, Cleopatra say." he felt he was possibly revealing a little too much of his course plans for the year, but Abigail had asked for extra tuition and she was interested.

Tomas stood up and walked to fetch a book, he offered it to her. 'A history of sex and the seductress' "It's not strictly part of what I'm teaching but the examiners like some extra information" he offered sheepishly

Taking the book, Abigail read the titled. To anyone else, the title alone should've made her blush slightly. Instead, she could only smile...it was all only part of the lesson right?

"Thank you... " she stood, taking the book, just now realizing how much shorter she was than Mr. Crane, which caused her to look up at him, "Is it OK if I call you if I have any questions about it?"

He smiled, "Of course" he found himself writing his mobile number for her, folding it and passing it to her. "Don't make me regret giving you this." he warned " now I'm pretty sure your parents will be wondering where you ate! This was only supposed to be a hello and make sure you had a familiar face to see when you start properly"
