I'm planning on getting my first ever tattoo this week...so I was wondering, do you tip the tattoo artist once he's finished?

It is customary and like with a restaurant or anything else of that nature it is a percentage...but it also should reflect how they treated you. Otherwise good luck and bring a friend if you can.

Thank you for that, I was wondering. And I'm taking two friends, but now I'm curious as to why you said that? Can you tell I'm nervous? lol

You might want to wait a few days and see whether you have a healthy, detailed, accurately drawn/spelled tattoo that is healing properly before you go rewarding your ink artist. It'll be a more sincere gesture if you go in later and tip rather than hand over a gratuity because you feel obligated.

They're hardly likely to be offended.

Well I've only changed my mind a hundred times...but I think I'm going with a celtic knot between my shoulder blades.

When getting my tattoo done, I tipped well because I thought my cursing through the pain might have been slightly rude... :p

So then where has everyone gotten a tattoo? I'm interested in the pain level and how much of a baby I'm being...

have 2 on each shoulder blade..one on the back of my neck...2 on each upper arm...2 on each mid arm and 1 on my calf..only the neck one hurt...but not too bad...i tipped everytime..

I have 2, a small and a medium one, on my right inner fore arm/wrist and one large one on my left inner fore arm. Kinda felt like a slapped sunburn to me, but not too bad.

I have 2 both large with blocks of colour... one on my hip, and another across my lower back.

It doesnt tickle... but pain is not a word I would use to describe the sensation. It can be slightly uncomfortable at times, but that doesnt last long.

tipping

I think it depends on the artist and how much they are charging in the first place. Tipically I find more and more are charging $100 bux an hour around here. Personally, you better be damn good at what your doing if you want that kind of money. I know there are artist that charge more. I prefer to pay by the job... if they do well, I tip. JMO

The pain is mind over matter ... if you don't mind ... it doesn't matter. It's not bad, just put it out of your mind. There will be a pricks along the way .. but isn't there always.

I just got my 2nd one done this past Friday...pain really depends on the artist. The girl that did my 2 has a very light hand so it wasn't really painful just a like a repeated bee sting. The guy my sister goes to has a really heavy hand and she said he really digs in.

I reccomend doing some reseach before you just walk into a place and get something done. Any good shop will have books of photos of the artists work...check them out

I totally agree with this. You want to know what kind of shop you are going to be walking into. And get to know who is going to be giving you your tattoo.
I have 4, all centered on my spine. Nape of my neck, between my shoulder blades and base of my spine. With plans for more. I am also learning my new machines so I can eventually have my own business. :D
There is a little bit of pain, and that depends on your threshold. But pain is part of the pleasure. ;)

I have 4 tats one center of my back a set just below my neck line on my back left shoulder blade and lower right back hip area the pain kinda depends on your tolerance what your getting how detailed it is and where your getting it. I have always tipped my artists well they are doing me a service the bigger the piece or the more detailed the more i tip.

I learned this from someone: If someone asks you if a tattoo hurt, just reply with "Do you have any tattoos?". If they say yes, then "Well it felt like a tattoo". If they say no, then "Well it felt like a tattoo" haha

Lets see, I have four tattoos. I have one on my left ankle, one on my right hip, one from bra line to hip line directly on my spine and one on my left shoulder. I tipped about 20 on each because I was only there max 2 hours. I figured it was generous and the guys did a wonderful job.

As for the pain, im a masochist so I liked the pain. I think the worst was my ankle, or the spine when he'd wipe the extra ink and blood away. That hurts more than the needles.

I could tell you how many needles are used for shading and how many are used for outline but I wouldnt want you to not go get it :p
