Tassie (my state) is bringing in a total ban for tanning beds because of the high skin cancer statistics.
What do you think - good public health policy or nanny-state move?

It's both. Anything the state does to protect you from your own poor decisions is a nanny-state move. Anything it does that keeps it citizens safe and saves money is a good public health policy.

After that it's just a matter of how much freedom do you actually need.

things that cause cancer always seem to get banned, no matter what the medium or method. this is just one more thing, yeah?

so either someone will invent a workaround, a type of tanning bed that doesn't cause cancer, or tanning beds will go the way of asbestos

Tanning beds always freaked me out, might as well cover yourself in butter and climb in a big microwave.

I remember reading something many years ago, there was a huge increase in skin cancer in Australia and they made the connection with a hole in the ozone they found.

I just wonder how many more holes in the ozone there are.

I wonder how long before they ban smoking?
We already have some of the strictest smoking laws in Oz.... totally banned inside cars and homes with any minors present, many public places have total bans (parks, recreational areas, swimming pools, skate parks, and all central shopping districts) as well as bans within 6m of any alfresco dining establishments. Most events are smoke-free too.

Apparently, the ozone hole that was affecting us has closed up.

Well that's a blessing. I believe the piece I read claimed a jump of 50 percent in skin cancer rate over an eight year period, pretty scary. It was along time ago, I don't remember when I read it.

One thing I noticed about Tassie when I moved here is the clarity of the air.
I think that has something to do with the high skin-cancer rates.
I never had a sunburn before I moved here, even when I lived in the incredibly hot North-West of Oz!
It's like the air is so clean, there's nothing to filter the UV!

You never know?!

A few years ago, in early spring I got my version of a burn from being outside in the shade at an event. I didn't realize what it was, my skin was pink and itched so i thought it was an allergic reaction. The girl I was with, got a real burn. Hers showed up the next day like mine. That same week my friend's kids got burned, even though they were coated in sunscreen. Someone told me there are suppose to be more holes in the ozone. I wondered if one was overhead that week.

I've already had a couple of pre-cancerous skin lesions cut out as a result of my youth.
Wednesday I am in the clinic to get 5 more that have been on 'watch' checked.
These days, i am happy to be pale!

This is a solid case of why people lie with numbers. What was the original chance of getting cancer? Here's why I ask, though these numbers are pulled out of my ass.

You have a .01% chance of getting skin cancer normally. A 50% jump means you now have a .015% chance of getting skin cancer. It's still negligible by most standards.

You have a 25% chance of getting skin cancer normally. A 50% jump means you have a 37.5% chance of getting cancer. That's a bigger leap and one you'd likely pay more attention to.

The problem with skin cancer is not so much the numbers, it's that many don't recognise the signs and by the time they do, it's usually too late.

Hope it goes smooth for you.

I had a girl friend who went through that. She was prone to moles. She got her first cancerous one at 18. She had to have a check up every 6 months for a long time. They'd remove ones that looked suspect. She was very pale by the time I met her but she use to be a regular sunbather.

True, numbers can be manipulated but in this case I think where there is smoke there is fire.

With a hole in the ozone, bad stuff gets in. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it won't hurt you.

Don't worry. By they time they turn it into a coat, it's already tanned.

I don't have the facts to say there is smoke and fire. My only point is that I'm always hesitant to accept numbers that speak about percentages (in general) that sound particularly impressive.

I know that just cus you can't see it doesn't mean it can't hurt you. I'm not saying their cancer rates were high, low or anything else. Just saying that I like having more data in front of me. I forget where I saw it (I think it was Busybody) but someone was pointing out that 100% more blacks voted for Bush than for McCain and it was "roughly" true. It just turns out that going from 8% to 16% sounds a lot different from saying someone went from 84% to 92% and if your point was that blacks favored Obama you're going to talk about a 50% decrease (or a 100% increase in the opposite direction if your savvy) instead of a roughly 10% increase. It's just good messaging.

Hey, I started that joke. Go look and see. You started the one about guy's rectums. By the way, Vetteman's been stealing that from you.

I prefer to go with my possibly faulty memory.

Joke stealing scrote.

One spot, on my bottom lip, has been playing up for the last couple of weeks.
My guess is, the doc will want to freeze/remove it.
Not looking forward to that!

Reading it again, that was a funny thread, by which I mean I was funny in it.
