Two weeks ago a local Hospital and regional Trauma Center announced it was shutting down it's Hyperbaric Chamber for emergency treatment of D.C.S. or the "Bends". They claimed that the reason for this was to save money. It made sense if you looked at it from a purely monetary viewpoint. To keep it ready for treatment of the "Bends" they had to have staf, including an M.D. on call 24/7. This for a Chamber that might treat two cases in a very busy month. (Besides they do have chambers in both Miami and Orlando.)

The Chamber was shut down for emergency operations this past Monday.

On Thursday they had to drive a Diver with a case of the "Bends" to Mami. (No you can't Med-Flight them. That makes it worse.) The diver is expected to recover.

Talk about a coincidence of timing.

The diver probably has a different opinion of the cost cutting measures!

We have a similar example of helpful cost-cutting.

The RAF withdrew its rescue helicopter service from Kent. Now RAF rescue helicopters have to cover our area from Norfolk or Hampshire.

Since the rescue helicopter was withdrawn, most of the incidents requiring helicopters have been closer to the closed base than to the other two.

Why? Because the English Channel is the busiest shipping lane in the world. Did the RAF know that? Perhaps not. They're not sailors; at least the accountants who much such decisions aren't.
