Just a thought...

I was reading something the other day, and I came across something which I'd read a long time ago but forgotten about. Now, I'm a Buddhist by faith, but what I read was the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14). Basically it's the story of a master who gives his three servants a talent(a talent was worth a lot in those days) each before leaving on a journey. When he returned, he asked his servants what they had done with the talents. Two of his servants had invested the money and made twofold the profit. The other had buried his talent ground, fearful of losing on an investment. The Master was so mad he cast the servant out and ordered his wealth to be given to the other servants.

So after pondering this, I realised that the talents in this case doesn't just apply to money, but also to people's own given abilities. For me, this means not to waste any oppurtunity to do what your best at, no matter what the cost.

When I was young I had the oppurtunity of chasing a career in professional sport, but I was forced to put it aside for my studies(mainly by my parents). At the age I am now, it's impossible for me to try and do it again.

Anyone have any regrets? Or been able to use their talents in a way that makes them happy?

At the risk of sounding incredibly snobby, I am very fortunate to be a talented painter and musician. I don't, however, plan to pursue a career as either, and in the past few years I've let these activities fall by the wayside.

Do I feel like I'm wasting my talents? No.

Although I enjoy painting and playing my instruments, I'm not naive enough to think that I'm so talented that I'm depriving the world of my gifts. This would be my definition of "waste". My family enjoys my paintings and my music, and that is enough for me.

Instead of relying on my artistic abilities, having a fun social life and having sex (just an assumption), I have been studying so I can learn a technical trade, get a well-paying job, and maybe try what I've been missing later.

I don't see it as burying an investment, but making a more reliable investment.

You can't change the question after I already responded! :p
