Taking the Plunge

I recently got some very nice feedback from a blind reader at Lit. He has software that reads the stories for him. He also listens to the audio stories.

Soooo...

I am toying with the idea.. okay I am just about committed.. of recording an audio story for Lit.

I am interested in the opinion of my esteemed colleagues as to how "dramatized" my story should be. I am doing a first person story and the teller comes quite vocally and several times. Does having moaning and groaning exceed the scope or enhance the story?

OK, pretending to know something about this, I'd say it depends.
:)

Really though, I think if your story says "and then I moaned" you read that using inflection and pauses, but if you've put parenthetical/italicized actions (" and then he entered me <moan> " ) you may have to try to act them out.

Though I've never listened to any of the audio stories available here, I think that if you have a good enough (maybe mean sexy enough) voice, that alone is enough to enhance the experience for the reader.

One question I have, though: If I told you I loved your stories and was deaf, would you send me a video?

Querida, I'd leave out sound effects too; unless done by a professional actor (vs. porn 'actor') it could end up hilarious (unless that's what you want). It may require some editing so that you say what's happening vs. "I'm coooommminnngggg..." or "OGodogodogodogodogod..."

I agree with perdita: sound effects are likely to come off as a bit corny. I'd suggest "telling the story" with feeling but shy away from getting overly dramatic. Think of your voice as punctuation -- if it's overdone, it will detract from the story. If done right, the reader/listener will not even notice you (in a very pleasant sort of way).

No, dear, if you were illiterate I would send you video. I am so committed to spreading enlightenment. ;)

BK,

As a guy who's very hard-of-seeing, I really admire what you're planning to do. Due to my lousy eyesight, I "listen" to all my novels and save my sight for newspapers, magazines, and computer work. That probably qualifies me as an expert, but only at listening.

I've got a hunch the advice other folks have given you is right; trying to reproduce the sound effects of a sex scene might come off (so to speak) sounding very hokey. But I'd encourage you to give it a try. Record one of your more vocal sex scenes, then listen to the playback and judge for yourself.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Well, if it will make your life easier, then I must record. Trying to find a quiet time here...

Alternatively, you could bug all the bedrooms in the local college dorm, and see if you get any interesting special effects. :D
