I have an RCA camera that does the same thing for close ups -- washes everything out with a flash meant for 6-8 feet away.
Try this:
Put the camera on a tripod and turn off the flash.
Make sure that there's as much natural light -- sunlight if possible or flourescent if you can.
Aim the camera at the chair or bed where you'll sit and make sure you cn get in position without bumping it.
Set the timer and get in position -- playing while waiting is optional as long as you hold still when the timer goes off.
If you have bright enough light, you can move while the picture is taken but pictures without the flash are very long exposures with my camera so any movement blurs the picture.
