No booing of national anthems before the start of each World Cup game! Just singing during and enthusiastic responces after the end of them.

Makes for a refreshing change.

Yet soccer fans get the "hooligan" tag.

Yeah, because we don't riot. We don't fight. Occasionally we get drunk an boo the national anthem but I never throw punches. Jeez, what a rube.

Whats the hockey team that throws squid or octupus on the ice?

Detroit. But that's more of a nuisance than a riot. No one has been hurt by a flying octopus.

I don't recall any Red Wing fans killing a player for allowing a goal either. Of course, it's Detroit, so it COULD just be my own faulty memory.

Except the octopi. :p

Sorry, but I'd much rather see a bunch of drunks beat the piss out of each other over having abunch of nimrods at Naussau burn a Canadian flag or Vancouver fans boo the American anthem.

And hockey and basketball fans don't riot??

Ever hear of the Richard Riot?

What about all those riots that take place after teams win championships.

Oh, and lets not forget the fights that break out during these games in the stands.. And don't say it doesn't happen because I've seen formyself that it does.

Don't get me wrong Weevil, I'm as about a big a hockey fan as anyone.. but bullshit like booing an anthem and disrespecting a country is about as low as a fan can get.

That's retarded. Booing an anthem, as disrespectful as it might be, is a nonviolent way of expressing feelings. Punching someone is a criminal act(Although not in a Hockey Game for some reason) and if you'd rather get punched than have me boo you than I have no idea how to continue the conversation.

But if you have to go back 50 years to find an example of hockey fans rioting in anger than I think I've proven my point. Riots after hockey championships are polite reserved expressions of joy. Maybe with a little looting.

Also, I've probably gone to, say, 10 times the hockey games you have and I've seen one fight in the crowd. And it was two guys and it was over before it began.

Booing an anthem is obnoxious. Going to games to fight makes you a hooligan.

I just did an internet search using the words, "hockey riot" and "basketball riot" and there are numerous news articles on violence occuring at or after sporting events. Most of these are at college games. Reading a few of these they seem to come from all over the states and detail police officers injured, looting, arson and brawling. All the ones I read occured in the last five years.

You have have you? And just how pray tell are you going to prove this?

And maybe you've only seen one fight. I've seen a few.. Some fitting your account, one where five people started brawling in a section. Bottom line though is I didn't say fights happen at every game now did I?

You also make a point about how I had to go back 50 years to find a riot. You would be right in your point if it took me to go back that far to find a violent riot that caused harm and damage.

But the truth is, I used the most famous riot as an example... All I had to do was go back a few months if that's really what you wanted:

U of M Riot

The second article

And about those championship parties that you have dubbed "polite reserved expressions of joy":

63 arrested and 50 thrown in a drunk tank considered "quiet" compared to other years.

And lest we forget the man that killed another man over a kids hockey game? Or the multiple and sometimes ongoing death threats to Mitch Williams after the 93 World Series?

My original point was that soccer / football fans get unfairly tagged as nothing more than thugs and hooligans when in all reality sports that are more popular here in North America are not much different.

Oh and by the way... about that seeing 10 times as many games as I have...

You've really attended 730 games this season? Are you a pro scout or something?

More fans have died at soccor events than at baseball, basketball and hockey events put together.

And secondly, the Richard Riot didn't really have to do with hockey per se. It had to do with the way the Quebec people felt about Colin Campbell's decision AND the fact that he showed up to the next game in Montreal. If he hadn't showed up, there wouldn't have been a riot.

Well I suppose I can't say there wouldn't have been one but the chance of one breaking out would have been smaller.
