sorry for the inane question, but what do the H and E symbols that sometimes appear next to stories in the index mean?

I wondered the same thing. I tried to click on the letters and my cursor gave me the descriptions. H = HOT and E = Editors Pick.

E = Editor's Pick. Laurel assigns these to stories she particularly likes.

H = Hot! You get the H by having a cumulative vote score of 4.5 or higher for more than 10 votes.
