Hi, I want to do a piece of art work for my niece who has arrived at "womanhood" the last year. Her body and mind is there.

What are symbols of womanhood do you think?

She is not a weak person, quite strong minded..... What thing or symbol states being a woman to you?

Also what is that symbol of a woman, you know the circle with the line somewhere. I don't want to get in confused with the man one or the gay, lesbian one :)

I'll write you a poem tonight about womanhood. You can cross-stitch it.:rose:

Yes a poem among it would be nice, she is quie the poet herself, I will ask her mother to find one among her writings for me to use. Good thought there, thanks :).....

cross stitch..... *puts finger down throat as a more pleasurable experance, lol*

The symbol is the circle with the plus sign (+) going upward to the right.

However, I feel that things like the womb, or just the hourglass curve of a womans shiloette is very significant.

The color red, seed pods of different plants express fertility, but fertility isn't just about being a woman.

A collage would be cool.

Here are some things I found that may help you, but I don't know.....

Good luck. This is a nice idea.

Thanks for all the info. I have a womb design of the Celtic era that I have always liked, maybe I could work on that.

Also the pomigrante fruit bursting open with it's seeds showing appeals with a poem written under it :)

here are a couple of verses I wrote a few months back for a card company I could use:

* * * * * * * * * * *
I am a woman standing with pride,
knock me down I do not hide.
I am strong as the days go forth.
My destiny is powerful of course.

If by chance a tear you see,
do not have pity here with me.
For within minutes I gather, I go forth.
I am a woman with pride of course.

* * * * * * * * * * *

* * * * * * * * * * *
I am fragile but hardy.
I am exquisite but powerful.
I am unhurried but swift.

I am woman
I have all.

* * * * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * * * * *
I am a woman standing with pride,
knock me down I do not hide.
I am strong as the days go forth.
My destiny is powerful of course.

If by chance a tear you see,
do not have pity here with me.
For within minutes I gather, I go forth.
I am a woman with pride of course.

You ever see The Judy Chicago Collective's "DINNER PARTY" ? That was something kinda cool of that genre... :)

Nope, can't say I've seen any of them :)

A female's face, neck, and shoulders. If it's a bust sculpture, the face and the gentle initiation of the upper slope of the breasts. If it's a painting. chaulk, or watercolor, emphasis should be still on face and upper torso. My opinion only....I think the face and upper body defines a female. Good luck!

A Peach

I think Sharon Stone showed it to the world - (No, not that!) - Seductive Power.

If I had to put my finger on something. Maybe a peach. Soft outside, hard inside and if you cut it open, not only is it sweet, but the peach pit chamber has a nice shape to it.

My thoughts.

Hey, I just got this in an email, maybe you can use it! :)

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE
...one old love she can imagine
going back to... and one who reminds
her how far she has come...
...enough money within her
control to move out and rent a place
of her own even if she never wants
to or needs to...
...something perfect to wear
if the employer or date of her
dreams wants to see her in
an hour...
...a youth she's content to
leave behind...
...a past juicy enough
that she's looking
forward to retelling it
in her old age...
...a set of screwdrivers, a
cordless drill, and a black lace bra...
...one friend who always
makes her laugh...
and one who lets her cry...
...a good piece of furniture
not previously owned by anyone else
in her family...
...eight matching plates,
wine glasses with
stems, and a recipe
for a meal that will make her
guests feel honored..
...a feeling of control over
her destiny...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
...how to fall in love without
losing herself...
...how to quit a job, break up
with a lover, and
confront a friend
without ruining the friendship...
...when to try harder... and
when to walk away...
...that she can't change
the length of her calves,
the width of her hips,
or the nature of her parents...
...that her childhood may not
have been perfect... but its over...
...what she would and wouldn't
do for love or more...
...how to live alone
... even if she doesn't like it...
...whom she can trust, whom she can't,
and why she shouldn't take it personally...
..where to go
... be it to her best friend's kitchen table
... or a charming inn in the woods...
when her soul needs soothing...
...what she can and can't
accomplish in a day
... a month...and a year...

Thanks everyone :)

I don't think I could write all that Estevie without putting a typo some where :)

I like the peach idea Judo, on open peach done in the right way could have the under tones of a open pussy... I like that :D

LC, I like the idea of a body form, but I tend to like only using the form of the person themselves in a picture. I have always hated wedding cards etc that have a photo of a couple on the cover that looks nothing like the bride and groom. :)

Yummy!

You know, I love the way you say "open pussy". Makes me all nectar-y, just hearing it. What are you doing, later? Care to have a picnic?

I believe that is incorrect.

I believe the greek/roman symbol for woman is the symbol for
Venus/Aphrodite, a looking glass. It's a circle above a plus sign.
O
+, only joined together

Oh! What a marvelous idea, what a thing of lovingkindness you do your niece in celebration of her new womanhood!

All the suggestions are very good.

Personally, i really like a pomegrante as a symbol of ripening womanhood, a body close to bursting with potential life, juicy and sweet and red, so red - but tough, too, and capable of protecting itself from the stray fierceness of the occasional bitter wind.

A Celtic symbol for woman is:

There is also the "Green Woman" (Sheela-na-gig) - Like the "yoni" figures of India, it is customary to lick one's finger and touch the Green Woman's vulva for luck.

More?

The Greek goddess Artemis was also a creature of the forest, attended by beautiful tree nymphs (dryads) and bands of unmarried girls. Although she was a virgin in the later Greek and Roman traditions, in earlier accounts she was the Mother of All Creatures, and not virginal but free of the control of men, as were her priestesses.

Consider looking through Angel Maker : The Short Stories of Sara Maitland - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0805055290/theendicotstudio/002-9288633-5643248
"By re-imagining a host of narrative legacies, Ms. Maitland reveals and celebrates the female body in all its timeless aspects."

Or perhaps a list of all the names that humanity has known GODDESS by?

http://www.mothergoddess.com/Gnames.html

These might give you some ideas of how to bring the right symbols into your artistic gift.

Thank you for the pics. That URL was a great inspiration :D

I also learnt while reading that Morgan Le Fay is the Goddess of Death.....

Cymbidia, I still like the idea of a pomegrante too. Maybe I can find a fruit goddess who can be holding a pomegrante.....

I like to take a few days to decide as it can take me a couple hundred hours to do a piece of my work. Also art work is not like a cooked meal..... it will be around for many years to come :)
