SUVs...

Off-road Vehicles

They're called this because after a big snow, the ditches are filled with them.

Hillarious.

The insurance posted it's crash test results. The test is accelerating the car to a speed of 5 mph and having it hit a flat surface.

The car that came out best was Ruby's Suburban with minimal damage.

The worst?
The Ford Explorer with $5,000 worth of damage! Wow!

I guess I do have a rather small dick. I never thought it was a problem before and I certainly never tried to compensate for it with my vehicle, but, it is small.

IA, you have some serious anger issues honey. You sound absolutely miserable! I feel for you, I really do. I can't imagine how miserable you must be. Get some help, ok?

Ruby

That I was angry?

because I used the word motherfuckers?
don't mind that...I use worse everyday..don't make the mistake that that is the extent of my vocabulary...because it is not.
We are in the same boat pal..my tool is not that big either, that means nothing to me as well. I could be John-fucking-Holmes and it still would make no difference I don't use it, so it would go wanting.
Me miserable? surely you must be mistaken, I feel great right now.

You got my number though, I'm damn angry...always have been...that's my legacy you understand, to be alone and fatally angry.

Breathe... Let's work past personal differences and discuss the topic on hand... *Giving IA951 a paper bag* breath stedily... It'll be alright

My Ex is one these drivers you are talking about. He had a Chevy Blazer. Bought it so he could look "Manly". First thing he did was go out and by a new stereo, amp, and speakers. Then, as though it was not already high enough off the ground, he jacked the thing up. At the time I left him he was building his own matching dashboard and shift knob, stainless steel with holographic circles etched in. He was also getting ready to get it a custom paint job. Oh and let me not forget what his big ambition was....he wanted to sting piano wire under it so that as he drove down the road he could chase down jack rabbits and behead them! He drove like a maniac and acted like he owned the road.

As a final note....last I heard he no longer had a lisence and had to sell his beloved Blazer. Awwwwwwwww.....don't I feel so sorry for him ;)

Oh...one more final note....by no means do I think all drivers of SUV's are like this :)

Sorry dude I got carried away
Let us return to hating the S.U.V drivers amongst us!

DEATH to the S.U.V!

Man! You are one angry child! You must blame the world for your own self-hatred, and envy! I ride a motherfuckin' Harley, bitch, and I know how to ride around all types of vehicles. The ones that have come a pube close to offing me are community transit vehicles! I would rather have the world in "SUVs" than in those little aluminum death traps that the greens push on the uninformed! Survival of the fittest, Darwinism in practice!
Have a mediocre day! :D :D

What's Senator Clinton got to do with this?

True enough. Every year as the snow starts to fall, when it freezes as it hits the road, I love to count the 4WD's in the median. And the UPS drivers.

4WD in deep snow...good
4WD on ice.....hockey puck.

lillend,

Sounds like your ex was a "jen-yoo-ine rayed-neck";)

Congress recently extended a tex emeption to SUVs, continuing to make them affordable to many Americans.

They're reasoning? Over the next Five years, 5000 people could die if they didn't have their SUVs.

They didn't even bother to look at the fact that thousands of people could've been saved had it been a regular car or Truck instead of the Explorer that smashed their vehicle. An SUV bumper is higher so it tends to smash through an ordinary vehicle and killing a family of four without getting a scratch.

SD412............
Obviously, you failed to noticed the documentary that was done on the safety of SUV's. Save lives? Surely, you're joking.
The documentary showed how, at a mere speed of 5 m.p.h, a Jeep Cherokee backed into a pole and the entire rear windshield detached from the vehicle and shattered. Imagine if you have kids sitting back there at the time. The same thing occurred with the Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager/Chrysler Town & Country. Basically, the documentary showed the extreme damage that occurred at the same rate of speed by the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Blazer/GMC Jimmy, and Dodge Durango (which btw, the name Durango was 1st used by the Chevy S-10 pickup in the early 90's).
The safest vehicles seem to be the full size pickups and sports utes (SUV). At least it's safe for its occupants. You have to have pity for the vehicle that such large vehicles (i.e., Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon, Lincoln Navigator, etc.) hits. In fact, that same documentary showed a Dodge Ram pickup "ram" into the same pole at 5 to 10 m.p.h to proof the minimal damage that was caused.

I have always loved the SUV's of the past, such as the Chevrolet K-5 Blazer, GMC K-5 Jimmy, and the Ford Bronco. But I wish to God that Chrysler brings back the powerful Dodge Ramcharger.

As for as the SUV's of today, I hope to have myself a GMC Yukon in the next few months. Fortunately, my company has gotten a raise for us and I will be getting my 2nd six month raise next week. So, I guess that I should be able to afford the truck of my dreams.

CONGRESS said they would save lives. I never did. I've been lambasting the things for poor safety. I'd like to see that documentary, is it a standard level PBS one or something? All I have is info from the insurance institute (just a coupla posts above this) citing a front 5mph collision with a flat surface which wrecked Hell on the Explorer and Cherokee.

Your point though of ICE is valid. Too many do think "I have a four wheel drive and can drive anywhere, anyhow". Maybe that is the fact that these vehicles to handle many of the dangerous road conditions rather well. <-- Comment not taken lightly. Many of the SUV's do have special handling problems that a car owner switching to an SUV are not aware of. Not to mention the lack of safety built into the vehicles. That is my biggest gripe, it has taken so long for the auto industry to put safety technology into these vehicles.

That's because that's not what the masses are acalling out for! They're crying out "Give me something bigger! Create something that only appears to be safe! I think if it's big, it must be safe! I want a car that's bigger on the inside and smaller on the outside! I'm a single mother so obviously I need a vehicle that seats 16 and is suited to drive across artic tundra and scale mount himilaya! I don't like people being able to see around me at all- that puts the fun and mystery back into traffic! I want to intimidate like a semi with no brakes on a 45 degree incline!"

As a general rule, the majority of those who purchase and drive 4WD SUVs, don't need them. As a general rule, those who buy a 4WD SUV use one of the following arguments to justify their purchase:
1. I need a 4WD SUV because of the driving conditions I encounter.
Unless you live in Montana, Vermont or Idaho, 30 miles up a mountain and the snow plow doesn't plow your road, or use it for construction, farm or recreational (hill climbing, mud bogging) use you don't "need" one; Want one because the perception is that it will allow you to go where others can't yes, but not "need". Actually in most areas a front wheel drive car with chains can drive in the snow on paved roads anywhere a 4WD can. There is only a small percentage of times they can't; and most people shouldn't be on the road then anyway. 250 inches of snow a year, huh? Well answer me this, how do the other 80% of the population, that don't drive 4WDs, get around in the winter time? 99% of the time, those who live in urban or suburban areas need only to plan their trips and allow the snow plow to do it's jobs.
2. I need it to carry all my youngsters around.
A valid argument, but I can tell you from experience a full size van is a lot better. When my kids were growing up I had a full size extended Chevrolet van. It had seats and seat belts enough to carry 13 people. Guess who the scoutmaster was that got to transport the scout troop to functions? You got it, me! I loved it, and by the way, I got 21 MPG on the hiway and 16 to 18 in town with that van, loaded.
3. An SUV is safer then a regular car/van.
I think that was addressed quite adequately earlier in this thread, but let me add this one little observation.
Take note of those accidents you see involving cars, and SUVs during inclement weather. Many times where a car will spin out, slide and stop when it hits the ditch, an SUV will roll over.

But there are other reasons that so many 4WD SUVs are sold.
1. A feeling of power and invulnerability.
This was brought up earlier in the thread and is true. Anyone that says it is not a factor, isn't being truthful with themselves. Sitting up above almost all the other vehicles around you leads to a faults sense of protection. Knowing that you have 4WD, assuming you can't be stopped by driving conditions, leads to that feeling.
2.Ego.
Look at me! I'm driving this great big, expensive piece of iron and your down there in your Ford Escort. Watch out or I might just drive over your ass!

One small tidbit of info for those that drive 4WD vehicles. A 4WD vehicle has 400% more traction then a 2WD, BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY MORE BRAKING EFFICIENCY!
With that much more traction, you can get moving a lot quicker, but can't stop any quicker. Which can, if your not carful, get you into trouble very quickly. And that staement comes from experiance. Anyway, nuff said.

Comshaw

CONGRESS? Those boneheads!!!

As I see it, SUV's of today will never be as safe as the SUV's of yesterday. I mean really! When you get in an accident with a 1980 Chevrolet K-5 Blazer, you'll know that your car's been hit.....LOL.

In reference to another post on this thread............
As far as the new Chevrolet SUV that can turn into a pickup? OLD NEWS......Up until recently, all full sized SUV's did that. The Chevrolet K-5 Blazer, GMC K-5 Jimmy, and Dodge Ramcharger had removable campers and they became mid-sized pickups. And before the creation of the Ford Expedition, the Bronco did the same.

Well, I'm not one of the people around here who drives an SUV...what do I need that for...I Have The Beast...and thast truck will drive over your fufu Explorer like it was a small bump in the road. Or your Durango for that matter.

I can definately understand why some families wants a SUV. Plenty of room, and the benefit of 4WD...IF the people knew how to drive the damn thing probaly.

BTW..RubyFruit...I ahve hauled more Suburbans home in the Beast, because they couldn't take the heat, than any other car around here.......

I'm kinda looking forward to 3 feet of snow, and see how well, all those arrogant young house wifes in their souped up SUVs, really handles the weather. And well to see how much they'll pay me to get them out of the snow, and not tell their husbands..THAT THEY DRIVE LIKE SHIT!!

Buy stuff like what? Back home, I had a neighbor who drove a 79' Ford Bronco without his camper all of the time. Once you removed the camper from a Bronco, Ramcharger, or K-5 Blazer/Jimmy, you had yourself a sharp looking mid-sized sports truck with a sports tow bar in the rear (alot like the Subaru Brat only larger).
The only inconvience was that it required 2 or more people to remove the camper and you had better have a garage to store it when you're not using it.
