Well it's Super Bowl Weekend, and I hope everyone's ready to participate in America's favorite illegal activity (no, not smoking dope): wagering on the big game!

Thanks to the wonder of the Internet, anyone can place a bet on the Super Bowl from the privacy of their own home and make the bookmakers in Costa Rica or Grand Cayman Islands incredibly rich. Internet gambling on the Super Bowl could top 400 million this year. The interesting thing about the Super Bowl, though, is not the bets on the game itself, but the proposition wagers (prop bets) that you can make on the side.

In between the 2.5 million dollar commercials on Sunday, overpayed steroid junkie millionaires will battle to determine the champion of the universe. Aside from who wins the game (I took the Panthers and 7 points for $500, although I think the Patriots may cover by double that), these are some of the more interesting prop bets (from betonsports.com, not where I bet, but the site that has the most unusual and varied bets in the known universe).

(For those unfamiliar with betting lines, a negative number indicates how much you'd need to bet to win $100; a positive number shows how much you'd win on a $100 wager. For instance, -120 means you'd need to bet 100 to win 120 dollars, and +150 means you'd win 150 dollars on a 100 dollar bet.)

I am not making any of these up -- these are all valid wagers that you can plunk down hard American cash for at the aforementioned site.......

Wait a minute. If a $100 bet returns $120, shouldn’t that be +120? Because you’re winning more than you wagered. Or do you mean you only win $20?

We should cut him some slack, it was a long post.

I think he means that you need to bet $120 to win $100 on a -120.

The odds are what I typically look at. At 10 to 1 you need to bet $1 in order to win $10. At 3-5 odds you would need to bet $5 to win $3.

It is all about making the money balance out on both sides. If one team is a prohibitive favorite to win the game going in the bookmakers would never be able to handle all the action. Imagine them having to pay out on the Jets in 1969 or the Patriots in 2002 if there had been no point spread; they'd all be declaring chapter 11 bankruptcy and running for cover (and their lives).

Here in New England too many people are getting bent out of shape that the line on the game isn't larger. I don't know what they are thinking. The 6 1/2 point spread is only to get an equal number of people betting on both Carolina and New England. It is just a bookkeeping (or boolmaking) numbers game. This way you can actually put money on a team that loses and still come out ahead.
