As I've tried to several times.

Does anyone have any suggestion or such that might make this a more successful try?

Has anyone here successfully quit, and how the hell did you??

Has anyone quit smoking?

It's not easy.. I Had a chest Xray a few years ago... On the way home from seeing the thing I threw my pack of ciggs out the car window and never picked them back up.
Worked for me.
Best of luck to you...:)

I'm a strictly outdoor/car smoker as well.

You'd think freezing my ass off in Michigan snow every winter would be enough to make me quit .....

you're right Lavvy - Damn those cigarettes!!

*runs outside to smoke*

I've never smoked myself, but i Know lots of people who have and quit. I'll give you sugestions.

My mom quit with the patch.
My aunt quit casue she was going to have a grand child and was told she can't see the baby if she is still smokeing.
My sister had panic attacks so went cold turky.
Had a few friends quit casue it was eather food or cigerets.

All seemed to have stuff in common thouhg.

There was a reason to quit... so find yourself one, how about this (second hand smoke is very bad for your nephews).

and each had the willpower to stop. they wanted a cigeret but forced themself not to have it. For this you may need some help or persuasion. my dad keeps his cigerets in the freezer, and threw out all his ashtrays. this is his way to slow down his smokeing.

Oh I never smoke anywhere near my nephews, or anyone who isn't a smoker, unless they specifically say that it's ok.

I quit smoking cold turkey years ago, and even though it was only the occasional cigar and pipeful (tobacco, not other substances), I was still tempted for quite a while when smelling cigars and pipes, so I can imagine how hard it is for cigarette smokers.

My suggestion is to get some medical help; go to a clinic or doctor with some experience in what works and what doesn't. Take advantage of any help you can get; patches, gum, whatever, and do it right, once and finally so that you never have to go back.

Hi Celia

I quit smoking about 15 years ago now.
In my opinion you have to make up your mind that you are no longer going to smoke. It does not matter what system you decide on. If you have not decided that you are no longer going to smoke then you are doomed.
I don't think there is a trick or a system that is better than the other.
I did it cold turkey and did not wean slowly off or use patch etc. Pick a date and make your mind up and go for it.
I wish you the best of luck because it is damn hard but you already know what to expect.
Take care
Bill

you have to WANT TO quit smoking or all the help out there wont do sqat for you.

i quit just over 4 and a half months ago with the patch. i used 5 patches out of the months supply and took myself off the patch and never went back due to having vivid dreams. i could not tell if i was awake or dreaming so i took myself off of it.

i didnt snack on junk food, but i did eat lots of fruit and salads or crackers and drank lots of water, juice, coffee. no alcohol as it goes hand in hand with smoking.

i quit the last time for 12 and a half years then the marriage broke up and i went back to smoking. now, it does not bother me to not smoke and i find food tastes different and the inside of my mouth does not dry out and i dont have sore throats or plugged sinuses in the morning.

good luck to you!

Hmm, maybe I should rally up something like the exercise thread, so you can all help me keep on track once I've decided on a path to take.

My mom quit smoking eons ago.

The costs of cigarettes made her stop. She thought of all the nice things she could by for herself and her family with the money she was investing in cigarettes. Count the cost Celiakitten Darling. What could you do with the money that you are spending towards cigarettes?? How much do you spend on cigarettes a year.?? You'd be amazed at how much you are spending. Not trying to bring you down, just offering to help.
Good Luck Sweetie.

Hug and Kiss,

Tried hypnosis once. Lit up as soon as I got to my car.

Used Nicorette and didn't smoke for about six months. Got off Nicorette and didn't smoke for another 6 months. Had "just one"
in a bar and became a junkie again, back up to 2 packs/day.

Tried the patch 5 years ago. Don't remember how long I wore it, but I haven't smoked since. I still crave after a big meal or when stressed. Actually tried smoking a few and every time I almost gagged.

Like they say, if you make up your mind to quit, you will. It's tough, but you can do it.

BTW - When you smoke, it seems like no one else in the world smokes. When you quit, it seems like everyone else is smoking!

LOL - I sing with you in one thread, just finish spanking you in another, and now I'm getting hugs kg!

Seriously, thank you for all the suggestions, I really do want to do this. I'm tired of getting winded when I exercise and such, among other annoying things. It's just not worth it!

I quit smoking 8 years ago this past July. To be honest, contrary to what most have been saying here, I really didn't want to quit. I made a deal with my doctor, who put me on the patch. (back then, it was by prescription only) My attitude was that I'd do his little patchie-thing and then just go right back to smoking and tell him it didn't work.

2 1/2 months into the 3 month program I took myself off the patch, and haven't touched a cig for over 8 years.

If you think of using the patch, a note: use it the way it was intended - not as a crutch. (putting on the patch during times when you can't smoke, then removing it to go have a cig) The patch does have side effects: I had the vivid dreams mentioned earlier, but they didn't bother me as much. Also, some difficulty sleeping. Mostly, I felt a little light-headed and sick to my stomach (withdrawals), which is why I stopped the patch earlier than expected.

I would recommend talking to your doctor, if you are serious. S/He can talk to you about various ways to quit - there are lot more products on the market now then there were years ago. Some people can go cold turkey, others need a little help. Your doctor may help you decide what's best for you.

Good luck - it is definitely worth it!

Ditto - no offense, but kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray; I won't do it. I don't know how my ex and girlfriends put up with me when I did smoke, yuck!

Stick with me Celiakitten
