Oh come on, you know you love me. I only make more work for you!

Quickies.

Flash fiction with an erotic cant. Most FF is 1500 words or less, you can make it shorter than that. 1000 words or less, basically. It's one of those that you can tell at a glance if it fits or not.

Marxist has that contest going over on the GB where you've got about 10 people sticking FF into the main database. I think FF is ripping the reader off because they're looking for something a little more, let's say longer.

Whattya think?

I can see where this would fit definitely. My first story was only like 1200 words... and I didn't feel right putting it into erotic couplings ... it was really just a quick fling type story...

anyhoo... I'll second the suggestion :)

<grin> Size matters

Okay, how bout sub-categories for lesbian and gay? I mean how much benefit is it to have a flash fiction category? Why not just post them with the others. If they are good, they will be rated as such.

I have a sneaky suspicion this might be a category only an author or premature ejaculatist could love.

Coupla points.

1. I don't care for flash fiction. I prefer stuff with more meat. (No, not that kind of meat!) But that really has no bearing on whether there should be a FF category.

2. Not everyone reads the stories to wank off. I think KM has a point. In general readers expect a certain length. It's not like they're picking up a book and can tell by the size how long it's going to be. (Course, savvy readers will look at the size of the scroll bar and the number of pages if they're really interested.) I can see how this expectation might be detrimental to both authors and readers. Expectations that are dashed can lead to unfair ratings.

However, if you do make a FF category, I don't think you should sub-categorize until the category is so filled with stories that it's impossible to navigate.

I like flash fiction. It requires you to refine your writing skills. There are some great FF sites out there. 1000 words is too long for FF. 1000 words can be a short story if written well. The FF sites I have seen tend to have limits of between 100 and 500 words. FF isn't story telling. It is a sensual description of a moment in time.

Stories

It's all storytelling, CraZ.

A man walks into a bar wearing a frog on his head. The bartender says, "Hey, where'd you get that? The frog says, "I don't know. It started out as a bump on my butt."

Beginning-middle-end

Setup -> Payoff

I don't think I could do FF, but the idea to have it as a catagory on Lit sounds good to me!

That's something I've been wanting to do for some time now. Unfortunately, it requires some tech adjustments on our side, and our tech dude is up to his ears in projects and improvements. My vision is to eventually have subcategories for the gay male, lesbian, and fetish cats. Readers tell me it's annoying to have to wade through the panty stories to find transsexual fare, and vice versa.

A question for gay male & lesbian writers: what subcategories would be most useful to you? Any suggestions in that regard would be most appreciated.

I guess the main one I would like is some sort of bondage category. Something to signify to the reader that this is not a 'romantic coupling' type story.

A little background on the General Board Writer Challenge: I originally wanted to take on one, maybe two, of the Literotica "heavyweights." I mentioned Nessus, KillerMuffin, Dixon, and others by name in that thread. None of them wanted to play for one reason or another. That's cool. I came up with the idea out of the blue and people are busy. However, a good number of first time writers wanted to take me on and make the competition a lot more friendly. A stroke of brightness by them, not me.

The only way to get all 10 writers in, and more importantly read by the voters, was to limit the length to 800 words. It turned out well with some established writers like RisiaSkye getting involved as well.

Maybe. But I doubt it. Not everyone is looking to masturbate to a story and needs length. Besides, is anything ever a "rip-off" if it's free and you don't have to view it? Not in my book.

I don't think at this moment Flash Erotic Fiction needs a separate category. There simply aren't enough stories and a pattern for how to produce them hasn't been established. If you've read my story, you'll know that I'm still learning myself.

If anyone wants to participate in the next General Board Writer Challenge, keep a lookout for an announcement today or tomorrow (Friday) on the General Board.
