To continue a theme of suggesting new lit features, since other features (who shall not be named) have been released. (Suggestion: keep each thread on topic, otherwise talking about other topics will take over this thread too)

Add “story length” to the search page. A reader posted this, which made me check the advanced search page (and the feature isn’t there). https://forum.literotica.com/threads/short-sexy-stories.1576527/

This could benefit everyone. Want a long story? People could find them. Want a short story? They could find them too.

And since there aren’t enough icons next to stories on certain pages… A ruler or tape measure icon perhaps, with word count next to it?

Hmm. What other icon could possibly be used? Something commonly associated with length. Often measured. Often referred to and common/instantly recognizable to erotica readers. Darn. I can’t think of a single thing!

Actually on the icon thing, I’m less interested. But the search thing, that would be interesting. And it was a readers idea!

The wordage was added to the first page of stories in a recent upgrade, which is a nice feature for readers.

Implementing such a feature would be complicated. Take for example my longest stand-alone story here. It contains 176,800 words and takes up 59 total pages. It was submitted chapter-by-chapter though, with each chapter being only 3 or 4 pages long. How would something like that be measured so that readers recognize the length of the entire story versus the individual chapters?

I assume the wordcount listed on stories now is a database entry, so it shouldn't be terribly hard to add it as a search criteria. Could be a drop down with a few choices representing 1-6 Lit pages, and then greater than. Once you're into 6+ pages, I doubt there would be much call for further divisions.

Anything that allows you to narrow down searches of such a large database is a good thing.

As to multi-part stories, the new series coding already amalgamates other statistics, and it's designed for integration with search already, so the combined wordcount could be used, as opposed to the individual chapters.

( Side note that the new coding would allow for the easy exclusion of multi-part stories from search. All that would require is a checkbox. )

This (perhaps unintentional on your part?) made me think of, which mag was it, Hustler? That used icons of the same type to indicate ratings of movies? I was young at the time but often read my dad's alphabet soup of men's mags and I distinctly remember that particular measure of ratings.

I tend to use something like the following to give readers a bit more info to help the decision to read or skip a story;

AUTHOR'S INTRODUCTION; This is a love story, it has its ups and downs. But life is like that -- so is love. I hesitate, but feel obligated, to warn that this story touches on some harsh realities. There is some content that speaks of physical handicaps that I hope are portrayed in a respectful way. If such content isn't something you want to read about, I understand. To be honest, this story surprised me but I followed the bread crumbs and I'm not ashamed of it. I estimate that the story, when published, will be about 3-1/2 pages.

Now that there's a Series Info option you can add, that would seem like excellent information to put there...

A feature I'd be interested in seeing implemented is tags visible in story listing and gender pairing. AO3 has both of these, you can tell at a glance whether a story is gay male, hetero or lesbian. This would allow stories otherwise forced into the gay male or lesbian categories to place themselves in genres that describe more than just gender. Because right now a gay male story could be non-con or a 100k slowburn romance and share a category and tbh I think that's kind of bullshit.

Being able to mark a chapter story as completed is a nice new feature. Unfortunately, few writers seem to be taking advantage of it so far.

I would like to see the story of the month (from the previous month) be listed as the first story for 30 days the following month when readers click on that category link.

I like the idea. And if it provided motivation to conduct the awards without 6 month delays (that’s the current delay, the last award was for March and it’s now November), even better! The size of the delay varies a bit from time to time. This six month delay I think is longer than the normal delay.

I wasn’t sure if it was just me, but I couldn’t see where the stories of the month had been updated since March. That’s really too bad…
