In a futuristic society of flying cars, why was there enough need for sprockets and cogs that two companies had enough business to compete over?

I always found it ironic the sweet, innocent farmgirl was the only one that refused the salary offered and did the role for a percentage of royalty...meaning she was the only one that became a millionaire from the show. Seems to me the millionaire would have known better...or the professor...or the actress...but nope...only the sweet, innocent farmgirl

What exactly was the main business of the Shady Rest that brought all of those out of town salesmen to such an out of the way place?

Why does it take a sunny day to create a shadow for the groundhog and that means more winter weather, but a cloudy or rainy or snowy day will hide the sun and thus no shadow and that means spring is here?
