Fire them.

One doesn't become a firefighter for the money.

But they still need it!

Anyway a bit of a blow for the strikers is that Health Care workers have just accepted a 10% increase linked to modernisation.

The firemens' case looks even weaker now...

Look. I believe we should be paying our firemen and cops way more than we do. They risk their lives on a daily basis, glady, and I salute them. But striking really isn;t in their best interest BECAUSE of what it is they do. If all the firemen strike, who puts out fires? No one, people die. It's a responsibility they just can't shirk like that.

During the last 8 days whilst the strike has been in force we have used troops and the auxilliary firefighting service. On a few occasions where life was in danger the strikers have left their picket lines...

All in all the number of casualties has been about the same as if they weren't on strike.

The only stumbling block to a settlement is that the Fire Service refuse to consider modernisation as part of any deal.

Exactly what the Health Care workers DID accept...

the sort where they reduce the numbers of firefighters to fund the pay rise for those who retain their jobs.

9/11 showed what a dangerous job fire fighters perform. Even if they get all that they're asking for in this dispute, if they really wanted to earn serious money they'd become accountants or lawyers.

The Health Service proposal is just that, a proposal. It now has to be put to all the organisations converned and then, if accepted, it will be trialled early next year. Full implementation cannot come before 2004.

tony blair is a schmuck, but what's worse, he's the only schmuck.

The work practices of the firemen are unbelievable - I have very little sympathy

They work two days and nights on and get 4 days off. They get 1st class final salary pensions - which is a huge perk- there is almost 50 applicants for every job -

Almost all firemen have so much free time that they can run a seperate business . I know a few and all have about 4 different sidelines . Great - I would gladly take a 20% cut if my employers would allow me to work these hours.

If they went to work every day and worked a full shift then I would gladly pay then 35 000 a year. You wouldnt need as many and the country could afford it and they would get the salary they want.

They are a throw back to the 70's the way they hang on to outdated work practices

My friends that are fire fighters would like to know which fire service you are referring to. They'd like to join and get the reduced hours!

Both friends I have in the service voted against the strike and both work 7 on 7 off with the shifts being 12 hours.
