Strange appointment to Highest Court

The High Court of Australia is roughly equivalent to the US Supreme court. It has just appointed a woman to the bench, another woman, in fact the females are now a majority of 4 on a 7 Judge court. As no vote of Parliament is required and they have to retire at 70 there is no particular advantage in appointing judges of particular political opinions, because they are not around for long enough to have excessive influence. So they tend to be appointed because they are good lawyers.
 
I "liked" this post, because I like that system far more than the one in the U.S, where some certain appointees (e.g. Clarence Thomas and Amy Barrett) are purely activists who are put in place to advance an ideology rather than interpret the law.
