One of the things that attracted me to erotica is that it can be whatever you wish it to be. The subgenres of erotica are plentiful and diverse. Whatever your predilection, you’re sure to find it well represented.

That is okay for the reader, but what of the poor writer who must craft all these diverse tales? Sometimes it seems like there are too many specialties to choose from.

With that in mind, I propose that the authors that frequent this forum offer up some of their definitions of their favourite genres for the readers out there, but also for the writers. Sure, reading stories in that class is the best way, but having a set of crib notes handy certainly makes the task of study easier.

With that in mind, I will attempt to define my favourite subgenre, the Anal Sex Story. Please realize that this is my personal interpretation of the story class, and is neither definitive nor all-inclusive.

The Anal Sex Story:

- sex positive or sex negative spin on tale
- positive: anal is the ultimate gift, given to a lover
- negative: anal as punishment, a humiliating task
- emphasize how anal is favourite act OR the most hated act
- emphasize how ass is favourite part of the anatomy. It is a fetish
- anal is the path to unfulfilled desire. Paradise exists through the sorrel gates
- anal is a strong taboo
- anal is a mix of pleasure and pain
- use toys, fingers, tongue to relax and stretch asshole before intercourse
- anal is the ultimate gift, or the ultimate violation
- anal shouldn’t be rushed. Slow and easy is the way of pleasure, rushed the way of torment
- anal is a filthy, deviant desire, frowned upon by many religions. This makes it appealing
- the anus is a passage of egress, not entrance. Can cause problems if forced
- many find anal sex degrading. Giver/Receiver schism stressed
- anal sex scares many women
- anal sex terrifies most men (het)
- abrupt anal activity causes the autonomic response of expulsion. The rectum seeks to expel the penetrating item. Take time if pleasure desires. Rush in if pain is the goal
- anal hurts unless care is taken
- anal needs lube always unless you desire to maim the recipient. No natural lube exc/for minimal mucous excretion from rectum
- for some, pain is part of the pleasure
- clitoral stimulation usually required for orgasm in women,. Denial of such contact often torturous
- two sets of sphincter muscles, inner and outer
- only can control the outer. inner are involuntary
- hard use of anus can cause incontinence, slackening muscle, anal wink, and other afflictions
- rectum often drops in people who have regular hard anal sex
- crinkled asshole vanishes for those who consistently have hard anal. Sphincter toughens up, becomes hard, smooth muscle.

Terms of anal sex/fucking/violation:

bore
dig
drill
drive
enter
force
puncture
shred
slit
spread
whack
hammer
nail
impale
insert
invade
jab
ream
skewer
spear
stab
knife
lance
pierce
plow
plunge
dive
rip
slam
spike
tear
poke
pound
push
probe
prod
pry
rupture
slash
lunge
thrust

That’s pretty much it for Anal. How about some of you folks define and/or outline the hot points of your favourites? Axel, how about the Loving Wives subgenre? Tiggs, how about Bestiality? Lex, you could do Incest. Couture, I think you are the best writer of G/G action I've ever seen. Linnet, I find your insights on multiple subjects astounding. I'd be interested on hearing about your favourite genre.

I think that if more people knew what made certain subgenres tick, the quality of stories posted on Lit would improve.

Cheers!

Okay, well, being a newbie to all of these boards, threads, and other misc thoughts, though I am by no means a newbie to Literotica, I shall endeavour to think long and hard on this subject. Until I started writing and searching for a place to post stories, I never knew that so many sub-genres existed. I never realized in my quaint mindset that there was so much more to explore than I could ever have imagined. I have found a few different callings in my own writing, and have found that I gravitate towards the well-written story in many areas that I wouldn't have thought of jumping into in my life prior to erotica. I write mainly BDSM (D/s) with explorations into anal and beastiality, bisexuality (both male and female), multi-partnered sex, and exhibition/voyeurism. I try always to focus on the positive, on the pleasure, on the deeply fascinating roles of trust and devotion to the needs of those involved. There is an emotional element, for me at least, that I can't escape, nor can I ignore it in my own writings. Is there a deep-seeded need to be protected from myself, my own imaginings? Perhaps so <giggles>. I am completely taken by the darker side of writing, though I do believe in happy endings. Exploration of those things that are forbidden, taboo, completely immoral, not to be thought of in the light of day, draw me and infuse my imagination.

Wow! I don't think this answered the assignment in question. It reads more like some sort of overly long introduction. Forgive me. Either way, you know a bit about me (not that anyone asked). Now, I shall have to go back and re-read the original post and tailor my response accordingly. :)

Lack of posts

Your opening post is the problem, T.

It is so comprehensive and so well-thought-out that nobody can offer anything half as good.

And I am not being sarcastic.

Man, I thought you were dead or something. How long does it take someone to move in Oregon, anyways?

Welcome back, Chick!

Chicklet's Move

Traditionally, people move to Oregon by covered wagon. Maybe that is how it is still done with intrastate moves. Sure did seem to take a long time for Chicket to move.

Welcome back. We missed you.

Moving and related subjects <my apologies to the thread>

Moving was simple, it was done in a day. The problem was my internet connection.

I am an impatient woman with an impatient mate, and the two of us have been using a cable modem for the last three years. Now, when we moved, we mistakingly forgot to check the availability of cable in our new neighborhood <we would have stayed, I dare say, despite the higher costs and suckier apartment if we'd known> So, here we were, in this big, gorgeous condo, with two computers and NO CABLE MODEM. So we called the phone company.

The local phone company is <shudder> Qwest. Qwest is infamous for being a whole company of fuckups. (Story idea...angry red headed girl kidnaps head of quest and butt rapes them for hours with her cordless phone, while shrieking "FUCK YOU!" as loudly as she can) So we called Qwest and Qwest was very excited to sign us up for DSL. "The software will be there in 4 - 6 business days" they promised us.

Who knows how long ago I posted my last post? Well, about two days ago we finally wondered where our software was for our DSL, which we have already paid one bill for. So we called Qwest "Where's our software?" we asked. "Software?" they replied. "For DSL," we specified.

Imagine noises on the other end of the phone a bit like saddened clucking, some typing on keys, and a few burps from the service person.

"What's your address, again?" the asked. We told them, and they clicked on their computer a little bit longer. <Keep in mind that to actually get to this person with the computer we were on hold for an hour and transfered twice, hung up on once.> "We don't provide DSL in your neighborhood," the service person explains. "But we've paid already," we complained. "It says here that the order was never placed, you've never been billed, and we most definatly don't have DSL in that area." This is the point that we freak out.

So, we take apart the computer, put in our <shudder> 56 K modem, and plug it in to the wall.

One problem.

We don't have an ISP.

Off to the video store for our free AOL trial CD, and we're BACK ONLINE! A lot slower, a lot sadder, and a lot more impatient, but back...and it will take at least four minutes for this message to be posted.

Not as long as here in Wales. We moved out of our old place on January 8th and are still in a rented place while the builders fix up our "new" one. The latest estimate is end of July.

Of course there's no cable, or broadband available at the new place, but I can plug my portable in (on days when the electricity works) and do internet fine over dial up.

Story Genres

For Chicklet and Charm. As our former prez Wilhelm von Schlickmeister would say, "I feel your pain".

Back on subject of Tate's thread. I went back and looked at old threads dealing with the loving wives topic. Most of them seemed to degenerate into confusion over "wife watching" vs "cheating". Numerous laments over cheating is bad, yadda, yadda, yadda, took the place of any intelligent discussion of the "Loving Wives" category.

Threads here are usually fairly open minded. This topic is the exception. I am working on a story post for the "How-To" category on the motivations and nuances of "Loving Wives". I think that is a better venue for exploring this topic.

Welcome back

LUV N STUFF

Could be worse Chicklet.

My IPS has one of those automated, monkey-block, multiple choice, "press the number" routines after the phone rings. [If it isn't already busy with some other lost soul.]

I have taken the journey nearly three dozen times, and have yet to find a question/response which does not lead to a "this way to the egress" conclusion.

An acquaintance of mine claims to know the secret of getting an actual person to respond. She calls up on their fax line and keeps it open with vox chatter, until someone interrupts to tell her to get off. Then she makes her comment /query. :D

BAck to the subject at hand after an interesting digression from the ever lovely Chicklet - and I'll always make passes at girls who wear glasses.

Anyway, been giving this some thought and wanted to make some comments on the Loving Wives genre as I gind of get into that fanatasy.

I see several sub-genres here:

Slut wives - women who screw other men while hubby watches or pimps her

Swingers - soft swing, full swap, 3 somes or orgies

Cuckold stories - wife wants a 'real man'. usually involves some humiliation for the husband.

slut wives - excitment is derived from the male pov by the visual of the wife behaving like a slut. Can also be a control thing, husband 'making' the wife do these things. Can also come from a desire to feel your wife is still desired by others, that you have a 'valuable possession' in her. Wife does it because husband wants her to. Either doesn't enjoy it or enjoys subject to her desire to please her husband.

Swingers - psychologically similar to the above with the added fun of the husband getting a little too. Again, the desirability of the wife comes in to play with the added ego boost of desirability of the hubby. I tend to like this kind myself, especially with the '1st time' sub-plot of the normally conservative woman being taken over by her animal nature.

Cuckold - not my favorite but a popular. More a 'cheating wife' thing. A big part of the thrill is the humiliation for the guy knowing his wife thinks the lover is a better lay. Biggest difference in this from the swinger - while the wife has good sex with the other guy in the swinger story, it's never quite as good as with the husband - for what ever reason. In the cuckold story, the lover is always a better lay, has a bigger dick etc.

Most stories in the Loving Wives catagory at Lit are the swinger types. A very popular fantasy for married men, one that I share. I will say that I'm not sure why I do as I used to be very much the insecure type. When I met my wife, a very attractive woman if I must say so, we couldn't go anyplace w/o running into one of her old boyfriends - and they'd usually be VERY glad to see her. Drove me nuts. Now the swinger fantasy with her overcoming her matronly modesty is one of my best inspirations.

I know, Chicklet, how about you seduce my wife while I watch, I know I'm genre jumping here but he, what's a mixed metephore among friends! :Q

Really enjoyed your post on the anal genre, got me thinking - a dangerous thing indeed. Saw Axel's on the loving wives and was inspired to add a few disjointed thoughts.

Story Genres

You did a good job capturing the essence of the category, Bob.

Some of the pay sites dealing with this sub-genre divide things even further

Bi Stories with either MMF or MFF.
Interracial with a typical story involving a white couple with black lover(s).
Submissive, usually the husband as the sub.
Group to cover swinging and two couple swaps.
Gangbang.
Creampie to isolate that practice from other stories.
I Like to Watch stories to include basic threesomes, usually MMF variety, and everything that doesn't fit somewhere else.

One other interesting thing comes up in a discussion of this category. Penthouse claims that a full forty per cent of their mail deals with this fantasy in all its varieties. That figure is backed up by Masters and Johnson and even as far back as Kinsey.

Accepting that forty per cent as accurate would make this the single most popular fantasy among men. I think that Lit. reflects this as reality. Consider the combined readership of "Loving Wives" along with some stories in "Interracial", "Group", and even to a small extent "Fetish" and you have totals approaching "Incest" on this site.

Like Bob, I enjoy writing for this category.

So why wasn't incest the most popular fetish in Penthouse, M&J, and Kinsey?

Am I too cynical when I say that incest is the most common fantasy, but that it is taboo to talk about it, even to people like M&J, or in mail to magazines. The reason it is read a lot on here is that reading here is essentially anonymous. Even if Maru records every access to every story, all he has is a URL. Even for those of us who are registered and give lots of details, who is to know whether those details are correct?

The Incest Story:

Hello folks.

First off, let me come clean and say that I really don’t understand this genre at all. I’ve co-written one story with the valuable assistance of Lexium (Thanks, Babe!) And have attempted a few others but have been unsuccessful in capturing the true essence of the incest tale.

To make a story incest takes more than simply doing a search and replace for all proper names and pronouns and swapping them with Mommy, Daddy, Auntie or Granny. It isn’t merely an incestuous label that makes a tale incest.

So what does?

In search of this answer, I’ve spent all day yesterday researching (Read: fucking around and slacking off on my writing) Incest stories. Must have read 30 of them. Only three or four of them sexually stimulated me. The majority were poorly written, single scene fuckfests. But there were a few pearls in the muck, as well. Gotta thrash that wheat to separate the germ from the chaff, and bloody hard work it is, too!

Below are some of the Hot Points and Rationales I could discover about Tales of Incest.

Usual caveat: The following is only my opinion, derived after a rather hasty indoctrination into the genre. It is by no means comprehensive or even necessarily correct. It is, however, the impression I was left with. Please also realize that the stories I read were primarily Mom/Son. I realize that excludes a whole whack of combinations and genre subtypes, but the basic premises should hold throughout. I hope my observations are of use to someone out there.

Warmest,

-T

The oldest or most capable male child (18+ on Lit!) becomes the husband figure in the household. He supplants his father, or replaces him depending on circumstances. Circumstances range from the father’s death, abandonment, or estrangement from the family. (NB: The ‘Father’ need not actually be the child’s father. It could be his mother’s boyfriend, new husband, etc. It must be a male that is having relations with the child’s mother and someone she relies on for financial, emotional or some other requirement.)

The mother often unconsciously forces the child to grow up faster than normal. She pushes responsibilities onto him that her man should be filling. These are all non-sexual in nature. (At first!) Often, the child starts to feel resentment; he has all of the headaches, none of the perks that go with being the head of the household.

If the child has felt sexual attraction for his mom for a while, the change in the dynamic between the two starts to stir old, suppressed feelings of lust. He feels himself to be in a position of power, a place where he can act upon his urges . There will be repercussions, so many inciting incidents are required before the son feels that the reward is well worth the risk. How the act is received is the point of the tale.

The child often has a sexual peccadillo for older, mature women. Mom is the ultimate prize.

Trust and intimacy already exists between close members of the family. Sex is the next logical step OR such virulent hatred exists between mom and son that sex is taken from her, used to punish and humiliate. (‘My Mother, My Whore’ type of tale.) Either way, strong emotion is involved. Nothing brings out the best and worst in people than their families. This condition makes the family dynamic an ideal one to exploit in Incest Erotica.

In tales of abandonment/death, the beleaguered son often starts to view his mother just another inheritance from his father. (In tales of poverty, perhaps the only thing left behind for him.) "My father in his wisdom left me much more than a couple of fine automobiles, a flush bank account and three beautiful residences in Maui. He left me his golden-skinned wife Jocasta, the best of all inheritances. The fact that this large breasted, sensuous woman was also my mother faded into insignificance. I now owned all of my father’s property. Mother – No, Jocasta – should be no different."

The son longs to possess the breasts that once succoured him, gave him sustenance.

The son seeks to enter and reclaim his mother’s vagina, the hallowed ground that he sprouted from. Furrowing the same ground he sprang from completes the circle.

All boys want to be better men than their fathers. Conquering his woman is a logical step. Besting their fathers in sexual prowess by claiming the father’s woman is an ego trip.

Bedding his mother is the ultimate act of love between mother and son. Their love for each other knows no bounds.

Incest is the ultimate reunion, especially between people who have drifted apart. Rifts in the family are again made whole via close physical contact OR sexual interference is the ultimate breach of trust that one person subject another family member to. Its devastation can rupture a sound family unit, damaging it beyond any chance of repair.

The little boy in the grown man demands that mom see him as an adult. He proves it to her via his skill in pleasuring her. By besting his father and conquering his mother, he proves something to her and to himself.

He longs to return to the safest place he knows, the warm encircling embrace of his mother’s arms. Burrowing inside her, trying to reclaim her womb is the next logical step. Being with her and in her are the keys to his happiness.

Claiming the mouth that has kissed him, guided him, chastened and comforted him gives him joy. He uses that mouth for his own pleasures. (Kissing, oral sex, etc.) He is amazed at how that same orifice of comfort can sexually satisfy him.

He is thrilled to learn more about the person he thought he knew more than anyone else on earth. He only knew her Mother aspect, and not the woman itself. He saw only a part of her. He now wants to experience the whole package.

As his confidence with his mother grows, so does his self esteem. He treats her differently. More like a man, less like a son. What this statement means wholly depends on the context of the story. It could be good treatment or rough treatment.

All aspects of his mother are now available to him. She is his mother by day, his whore by night. She is available to him at any time.

For impregnation tales, the thought of siring your own sibling is a rush. So is the thought of utterly replacing your father. More so if you despise the man. The son’s hot sperm burns away all traces of his sire, filling his mother with that which is pure. The child that will grow within her supplants the ‘Old Order.’ with the new. Akin to breeding his heir.

It is better to fill your life with love of your family and not just thoughts of it. Unsatiated lust breeds ill-will. Claiming his mother allows him to express his deep love for her, perhaps better than words or deeds. A particularly useful device in tales of estrangement between the returning black-sheep son and mother who felt abandoned by him.

The bond of shared blood is strong. Like calls to like. Sex between family is a natural act, frowned upon by society for tenuous reasons that no longer exist.

Shared blood and shared history makes for an unshakeable trust between people. Why develop a relationship with another woman that may take a lifetime when you have already done so? Your mother’s love is never in doubt.

Son seeks to raise his mother’s spirits, bring her out of her doldrums. He decides to take his dowager mother’s recycled virginity. Through him she lives again. The woman cannot live without being whole. He reawakens her sensuality, her true womanhood.

The son is tired of being betrayed by evil, shiftless whores who do not understand him, or those who seek to use him. He turns to the only woman he ever trusted and who’s always looked out for his best interest. (Mom, sister, grandmother, aunt. etc)

Eugenics - Keep the bloodline pure. A staple in 'Blue Blood' fiction. No outsider can ever hope to enter the inner circle. The males breed with the females inside the family. The occasional adoption brings in fresh, strong genes into the mix. The adoptees are always extended members of the family. The family’s historians and genetic testing see to that. They breed the best and the brightest, the fairest and the strongest via their program.

Starting an open, loving relationship with the mother is the only foolproof way of keeping her safe and ensuring that she feels loved. She has had a hard life and is on the brink of ruin. (Illness, drugs, alcohol, sexual promiscuity, rough-sex junkie, or any combination/addition of distasteful problematic behaviour or affliction.) The son decides to take care of the mother’s needs to bring her around. She depends on him just as he once depended on her. They need each other. He becomes the only trustworthy person in her life.

Long standing history. For a lot of those people, their entire family was raised and died in one location. Really strong family ties and sence of community. Who should they trust, family or strangers?

Interesting exploration, Tate. You covered many aspects I hadn't considered.

There is one other appeal of incest stories. I think it gets overlooked. Good stories revolve around conflict. Incest has conflict inherent in the situation from the start. Even in the hands of an inexperienced writer, the conflict comes through. If nothing else, characters have to overcome the morality issue dictated by society and tradition.

More than a few threads have explored the reasons for the popularity of incest here on Lit. The fact that other free sites do not allow it is surely a big factor. But, in the mix somewhere is that desire by readers to enjoy a spicey story with well defined conflict.

I think we may be mistaken in assuming the average incest fan is using stories as a substitue for some unrequited lusting after a family member. It may be that most readers are just looking for a good, conflict based read. What percentage of readers would fall into either group is anyone's guess.

I agree.

All of those points I outlined refer to the story characters, and not to the readers. I think the point I made that jibes (somewhat!) with yours is the following:

Trust and intimacy already exists between close members of the family. Sex is the next logical step OR such virulent hatred exists between mom and son that sex is taken from her, used to punish and humiliate. (‘My Mother, My Whore’ type of tale.) Either way, strong emotion is involved. Nothing brings out the best and worst in people than their families. This condition makes the family dynamic an ideal one to exploit in Incest Erotica.

Wherever there is high tension and strong emotion there is the possibility of conflict. Conflict is what makes or breaks stories.

Ok Bob I would like your opinion as to where my story should be as it was accepted into the loving wifes catergory yet doesn't fit into any of the sub genres you mentioned. It's simply about a loving husband and wife, no one else is involved. The link is in my sig line the story is called Exotic Exploring.
I just don't think you can narrow the loving wives down to just wives cheating on their husbands in the ways you have mentioned.
Sure most stories in the catergory are about what you have mentioned but there are other types too.
I actually asked which catergory to place my story into as it could fit into a few such as anal, toys, first time, but it seemed to fit the loving wives best.

Dear Cherry-lips

You are correct and I give a very public Mea Culpa. I didn't indend my post to be the definitive work on the subject. My understanding of the catagory was that it was intended to be stories where more then the nuclear couple are involved - different from the orgey catagory in that the focus was on the broadening of the marriage relationship as opposed to just a group grope.

My definition was overly narrow and I thank you for expanding my view.

Enjoyable stories BTW.:D

I believe it is impossible to discuss "Loving Wives" without the word "cheating" entering the picture. This is usually followed by all the negative baggage that goes along with that word.

For the record, cheating is painful and nasty for the party being cheated on. It is also secretive, almost by definition.

Laurel, in her wisdom, chose to call this category "Loving Wives". Maybe she did that because when the spouse is in the middle of the action it isn't cheating. Swinging isn't cheating. Threesomes with a married couple and another person isn't cheating. Why? Because the spouse has full knowledge before, during, and after the fact.

There, I've got my balls hanging out there in the wind. Who wants to pick up the Louisville Slugger and take the first swing?
