I haven't looked here yet, but...

Assuming that the authors did not give the permission... should all authors unite and try to bring down these thieves in some way. And how nasty should it be?

I am struggling with morals again...

It's not a question of morals. Your work is copyrighted. It's illegal for someone to take your work without your permission to use it for their own commercial gain.

The thief, or thieves didn't bother to even try and cover up the fact that these stories came from Lit.

I think the technical term for these people is wankers... :D

How does one find out if one's stories have been pinched?

If you find stolen stories, the first thing to do in to PM Laurel. Laurel does not stand for that sort of thing and she can put a stop to it.

Laurel has already been notified of that site. Emails to the site host's abuse department go unanswered.

If authors are serious about their writing then they have already protected themselves. :)

OK well that's interesting. If I suddenly got serious about my writing how would I protect myself short of not posting here on lit or elsewhere. Copywrite? I doubt that would stop these guys.

Doesn't seem they've changed anything in any of the stories, incl. titles. Scroll through the site...links are at the top of the page.

They're idiots too. I was just browsing their How To Section (notice every category is the same as here?) they've got at least three or four that I noticed posted twice.

True it would not stop them - but how are you doing anything about protecting yourself?

Legal threats etc. don't work with most of these story thieves, they just figure that few if any are going to spend the time and money to actually sue them for copyright violations.
They are one of the reasons that I quit posting stories here on Lit.
Personally I am leaning toward finding their physical address and doing a little work on them and their servers with a morningstar mace.

That's my point. Right now I'm Not doing anything except learning. So how does one protect themself. What do you do?

Morons! They stole a really old story from 2002 of mine, The maltese Penis. It's got a bunch of typos in it and they didn't even see them
Actually, if they are run-of-the-mill story thieves, they probably didn't even look.

That would be my guess. there was something somewhere about specialized search-bots grabbing stories.

Whois tells me that the domain and the servers are in Russia, the wild west of the internet age.
These people don't give a shit about copyright laws, and they don't give a shit about your stories, either. They use bots to harvest text, and automatically place it on the servers, and... I don't know why this particular site is up, unless it hosts some sort of Trojan or something!
:(
