I've been noticing when i read stories most of them start right off to sex sex sex. Thats kind of boring. You need something to lead up to the good stuff to make the story interesting, instead of being like everybody else's.
I just thought i'd share that.

Can I ask what was the last story like that you read?

Thanks.

glad to hear (read) that i'm not the only one

I agree with your assessment. I have tried to keep the lead in to the "good stuff" to about 15% or so of the total word count so it doesn't take too long but I still have some feedback that complains the stories are too slow to develop. I haven't changed my style to accomodate those readers because I don't want to make it too unbelievable. Of course, iIwrite under the celebrity category so its always going to be pretty far fetched, but I feel it should still have some grounding in reality (however slight it may be). Otherwise, it's just a letter to Penthouse (not that that's a bad thing, just not a goal of mine)

I have read quite a few of the stories around here and have found many that do not jump straight into the sex.
Keep looking, there are lots of fantastic stories around here. Post a thread and ask for people to tell you a great story they read that is what you are looking for. :)

A tale of Two Stories...

Currently - I'm writing two stories. Both are BDSM - but both differ greatly in several ways. The first one is less sex - more story while my second story is just burtal sex strung together with what looks to be a plot... So far, the prelude to the first story has gotten some pretty good reviews... but it hasn't been voted on much, and I haven't gotten much feed-back. When I start posting the second story, we shall how reactions differ.

My point is - everybody has different taste and what we want to read might change with our moods. I enjoy a good stroke story! But you know what? I like good sappy stories too - and good love stories. <shrugs> To each their own.

I agree with the second part of the sentence, but not the first.

Not that I object to Neverclear's tastes. Most stories work better with some lead in, and some of the best go a thousand words or more before breaking the tension. I've also read excellent stories that open at the moment of ejaculation. The glory of erotica is variety and while formulas abound, none are essential.

What the author must not forget is to somehow involve the reader, be it mentally or emotionally or whatever. An uninvolved reader has no imagination and any story read without imagination is a dull story, no matter how polished the prose. This is probably this effect that Neverclear is really complaining about.

This 'involvement' is probably easier to achieve when the characters are in a realistic setting (i.e. with their clothes on) but as long as the author sparks the reader's imagination, it's all good.

Little old fence sitter me. (Not!)

I can see both sides to the discussion, but come down firmly on the side of scene setting.

Some great stories can be made to work by opening on the 'good stuff', but very few. And these more often than not take a scene-setting pause after the first few paragraphs.

To me a story is all about the people in it. If all the characters are for is to provide sex, then we might as well give our stories to a computer to write.

What makes the sex exciting is the knowledge of what led up to it, or what the people involved think or feel. Why this is happening. Personally, I have to care.

So, what I'm saying is, I want to read a story, not an event.

Or maybe I'm just too old to be terribly interested in a quickie any more.

Feel free to disagree (about my age).

I try to tell a story, with events surrounding and/or leading up to the sex. Which is why of the four tales I have posted so far, three of them are multi-part.

If anyone is interested, you can find them here.

It depends on what you're writing...if you're going for porn, then sex is the story, and usually not a very interesting one, not by itself. The "porn" stories tend to be a lot less real because they lack any character development. I personally prefer to read about more realistic characters having sex less than the faceless, nameless whoevers type character. Sometimes, however, the story can be the less important issue to the reader, meaning they don't care about who is having sex, or anything like that, but merely want to jerk off. Neither is a bad thing, so I'm not knocking anyone's writing or reading preferences.
Truth is, you have to write the way you want to and not worry about any body else's tastes.
For the most part, the people who read the "porn" aren't well represented on the board...rephrase, the people who ONLY read the porn aren't well represented here. Mostly the people here are writers, not just chicken chokers...
