I had a reader e-mail me yesterday. He thanked me for the series of stories I've been working on and informed me that the same story was on another website but in a different format.

I e-mailed him back and he was nice enough to give me the specifics.

I checked it out, and sure enough, the guy hadn't even bothered to change the title. He had simply merged two chapters and printed it as his own.

I notified the website and asked that it be removed.

Anybody else have this happen?

Thanks. Picked up on it now. Seems to be a widespread problem. It isn't the end of the world but sure is irritating to work for lots of hours on it and it be just picked up.

Stolen stories again -

Here is another thread on the subject:

As per Killer Muffin's suggestion, it's a good idea to select several unusual phrases in your story, surround them with quotes, and use that for a search.

If something has been stolen, that's a pretty good way to locate it.

PM Laurel with the information (not email) and she will write to the site owners.

We all have to stay vigilant.

What is the name of the site that has your work?

Just a follow-up. I informed the webmaster on that site about eight at night what happened. Within hours, he had not only removed my story but the other 48 stories that the person had submitted and apologized, saying that it was totally unacceptable on his site or anybody else's.

That's a great idea about the quotation marks thing. Never thought of it, but then again thought that somebody would just take our ideas, not our entire stories verbatim.

Silly me!

that's good syndee that you did a follow up and removed your copycat story from the other site and it was also nice of the person to inform you someone else had copied your story. I think this sort of thing happenns more than you think. All the best to you!
