Kind of like, what would have happened to the world's culture and aesthetic if electricity, fossil fuels and digital automation hadn't taken over high tech but steam technology had continued to evolve at ever accelerating pace

Got it. The golden age of mechanical invention right before the time of the internal combustion engine.

There's a novel, a collaboration between cyberpunk originator William Gibson and sci-fi/speculative fiction wizard Bruce Sterling, which is said to have been influential in establishing steampunk style and tropes. Their setting hinges on mechanical rather than electronic computation, so, it's kind of an alternate-history where the information economy of the world is based on the hardware of Charles Babbage rather than, say, any of the hundreds of far more famous men and women who invented and developed the early electronic computer hardware.

Sounds very Jules Verne. Thats the only point of reference I can conjure up.

Sure! Jules Verne was a futurist writing during the actual period where contemporary steampunkers postulate the alternative-history splitting point. As such, his work did provide a lot of aesthetic and maybe some thematic inspiration for steampunk. I honestly don't know whether anyone regards him as a steampunker, though, because I personally believe that cyberpunk was a necessary predecessor to steampunk's ethos and full thematic content.

Perfect. An added dimention to a visual style.. Makes it a lot easier for me to conceptualize the style..
