Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, faces up to 15 years in jail for being in a sexual relationship with a 15 year old teammate on the high school basketball team; the age of consent in Florida is 18. The girls began dating last September and became intimate. The HS basketball coach discovered their relationship, threw Kaitlyn off the team and called the 15 year old's parents who called the police. The police tapped the phones and recorded the girls discussing their relationship. The state attorney's office is pressing charges.

Kaitlyn has been offered a plea bargain, but her family says she's being persecuted for being in a Lesbian relationship and wants to go to court.

What do you think?

If it was male/female the boy wouldn't have the out of being "persecuted" his ass would flat out go to jail.

If the female was 18 and the male 15 same deal.

One girl is 18 and the other a minor(and by three years)

I feel bad for her as let's face it in many ways 18 is still a kid.

But it is the law and know what? if Lesbians want to be considered "equal" then you don;t get to play this card.

You want to be treated the same, then the bad comes with the good.

This is not a hate crime, its statutory rape (even though its obviously consensual)

"Somebody's" going to have a cow when they see that I said the same thing on the other well-hashed thread cited. :D

Would that be me?

Why would I have a cow if you said something similar?

I never looked at the one on the GB. I only post on the goofy threads there.

But it seems simple to me.

Hopefully safe bet is not around or jeez.

I first read about this a few days ago. I immediately checked the calendar to make sure it was still 2013 and that I hadn't stumbled in some time warp and landed 60 years ago or something.

It just doesn't seem to me to be a situation that deserves the draconian reaction it has received. It's two high-schoolers, for crying out loud, it's not like it's one child and another perv old enough to be the child's parent.

I feel that way as well. Statutory rape is a slippery slope because most of the time it is consensual.

I also as I said above find it hard to see 18 as a true adult, especially these days where kids are more coddled and immature than ever.

This is why age of consent in most of the US and other countries has become 16. Too many 18/19 year old boys having spiteful 17 year old girlfriends charging them with rape.

But this other girl isn't even 16. But I get your point. I doubt this girl is going to get hit that hard in court.

I think the parents are pushing it because they have an issue with thier 15 year old being a lesbian. Guess what though? Now everyone knows. Good move.

It started when one of the girls was 14. You can't consent to anything like that at 14 with a shred of responsibility. If you've ever raised a 14-year-old, you know that.

That said, no, I'd handle it all very quietly, mostly with counseling. The great American way is that even those involved want to be scintillated by the juicy parts of the story going viral.

I raised two and with one went through an issue of a 19 year old coming around when she was 15.

And of course she was ga-ga because he was older and he was "so hot" and had a mustang and etc....

It got handled and somehow we managed to keep the press out of it. Although my daughter did post what an asshole I was on her facebook page.

I got a 16-year-old sister dropped in my lap in the states from an overseas Scandinavian posting because she ran off to Copenhagen with a 32-year-old British diplomat. Had to detox her too after I inherited her. Made sure that didn't make the papers and she's just fine now. I was too busy with her to have any idea what happened to the Brit--or to care particularly.

How did your sister end up in Scandinavia? When you say detox, you mean literally like she was hooked on something?

We've taken in a few teenage girls as a temporary home from the shelter my wife works at, some have had issues with drugs, its no picnic. But again I have somehow kept them from going all viral on us.

My dad's government assignment. She was definitely hooked on something. I have no idea what. In keeping with keeping it all under raps, I had to cold turkey her and then deal with occasional flashbacks even after there was no evidence she had access to drugs anymore. Couldn't even let my dad's employer get wind of the situation. We had to home school her. As you describe, she was bitter at my mother for the tough love approach (if I hadn't agreed to take her, it would have had to be a lock-down convent in France), and I've had to tell her frequently that the tough love is why she's still alive, with kids and grandchildren, and a great annuity from good jobs. And no police record for anything.

The readership of the Authors Hangout thread is vastly greater than the LGBT Chatter thread and this story deserves all the coverage it can get.

IMO the parents of the 15 yo are bigoted, homophobic assholes who shit a brick when they discovered their daughter was in a same sex relationship and called the cops to do their dirty work. The girl's mother has already said it's impossible for her daughter to be Gay.

It would have been so much kinder, more understanding and compassionate for the 15 yo's parents to sit down with the 18 yo's parents and the girls and work something out between them all instead of subjecting both girls to all this humiliation and publicity. Unfortunately, the law's the law and unless Kaitlyn has a damn good lawyer and a sympathetic jury, I'm afraid this will end badly. :(

Well I hope she realizes now that she owes you big time.

If she kept having flashbacks even after withdrawal it it was most likely LSD maybe PCP.

The last girl we had was hooked on heroin courtesy of her pimp turned dealer(why I have such a low opinion of the sexual trafficking non consent bunnies here)

Once she had a nightmare and was balling on me, then threw up on me. Actually threw up on me a few times, part of the withdrawal.

Good times, but I believe in karma and am trying to even my wheel from when In was a real motherfucker in my teens and twenties.

Sure, move it over here. But the discussion it's already been given is a good one to consider.

Of course it will end badly. Just letting the tabloids get hold of it guarantees that. This is Maury Povitch and Dr. Phil-level titillation--even in salivating over discussing it here. The great American pastime.

She tolerates me more than she does my sisters or did my mother (didn't bother to attend her funeral)--but I'm not at all sure she makes the connection that she was a little shit and got saved from herself, giving her time to grow up before there was nothing to salvage.

Dr Phil is nothing short of dangerous.

he was arrested for conning women out of money in the 1970's and he's still conning people

I wouldn't be surprised if within 15 minutes of the story breaking about those three girls held hostage all those years that asshole wasn't on the phone trying to get them on his show.

And I agree this is another of the endless threads are are not suited for here.

But then they couldn't blame the 18 year old for seducing their daughter to the "dark side"

I think in the end their aggressiveness and attitude is going to make them look a lot worse than that "criminal" of an 18 year old girl.

But again it is the law.

In her defense, it took me almost 25 years to realize my real mother did me one hell of a favor by putting me in the custody of the state.

Even though I ended up with good people who raised me like their own(and My foster father repeatedly told me I was just as ungrateful as his real children) and gave me a chance at a good life I still resented her and never "got' the sacrifice she made to keep me alive.

I read the story and I agree with you.
That it's two girls is immaterial; it's statutory rape.
That raises an interesting discussion on defining what actually constitutes 'rape'; penetrative sex could be a bit tricky to prove here, maybe?

As much as I would love to see this all handled quietly and without legal intervention, I have to agree with Pilot's take. We can't make a distinction when it comes to sexual orientation in this kind of case. It may very well be that the parents of the younger child are prejudiced against the other girl's sexual orientation. But ultimately, that doesn't matter. Different sex, same sex, the law should apply equally to all. To make an exception in this case would be to open the door to no end of abuses of the statutory rape laws.

Maybe, maybe not. A penis is not the only thing that can penetrate.

Here's the thing, though. I agree that the law is the law and should apply to everyone equally. But if the 15-year-old's parents had found out she was having sex with her 18-year-old boyfriend, what would have happened? Would the police have been called?

Maybe. It's happend before. But more likely, they would have grounded her, told her she could never see him again, and had a talk with his parents. Freaked out. But call the police? Pursue prosecution? It certainly would not have gotten any media attention.

That's what sucks about this. It doesn't really have anything to do with the law. Just sucky, bigoted people who can't accept their daughter is gay.

The "what ifs" don't really matter. Individual variances aside, when it comes down to it, this is a case of a person of the age of consent having sexual relations with one who isn't. What could have happened is immaterial. The simple fact is that the law was broken, and it was a law that, by proxy, is agreed upon and upheld by everyone in this society.

So it has everything to do with the law. The bigotry, the hate, while it is deplorable, is inconsequential. This isn't a hate crime. It's a legal one.

This kinda shit didn't exist when I was a kid. No one had a problem when their 15 year old daughter dated an older guy. When parents discovered the sex they ended the relationship. End of problem.

But the feminists got involved in the 70s, and put an end to older males exploiting our young girls. They gave Mom a stick to enforce the rules.

If you don't like the law, change the law.
