We won't see real spring here in Hogtown for at least another month. And I fully expect to shovel my walk at least once more over the next several weeks.

On the other hand, I don't think that's so bad. Twice I've lived in places where it snowed in June.

I also have a hypothesis, as yet unproven, that winter is necessary for continued sanity. Places where it is hot all the time causes the brain to soften. You need winter to harden it up again.

It seems to me that the places in the world where it is hot all the time are inhabited mostly by crazy people.

But that's just my opinion, and I could be wrong.

It abruptly occurs to me that I haven't dealt with the thread topic.

I deal with Spring Fever by taking long walks along the boardwalk near my place. I check out all the ladies showing off their new swimsuits. I'll know it's time to shuffle off this mortal coil when I can't appreciate this anymore.

Bck in the Eurocentric nineteenth century this was generally accepted as true. It was really thought that cold winters were necessary to produce "real" civilization by forcing people indoors where they concentrated on developng their intellect.

Maybe they were on to something.

The only exception being the Donner Party.

Just for the record P. I think we can look to said groups to understand the value of family, loyalty and love. They seem to have the gift.

OK, and I am sure you did not intend itk, but that is so often said condescendingly, i.e., Those Mexicans may be stupid but they sure know how to live and love.

not being difficult, just an experienced Mexicana,

I can't speak for anyone else, but in my life the families that have taken me in, made me feel instantly comfortable, loved, and as though I were one of their own have been Mexican and black. Now that I think on it, I suppose I have built up a stereotype in my mind. It is one based on the love that I have received and returned for these specific families and a few other strangers who have at times bestowed great kindnesses on me when they were sorely needed. There is no condescension from me. The stereotype that comes to my mind is based on love, respect, and gratitude. I apologize if it ever comes across as anything else.

- Mindy

No apology required by me, Min. I do try to be careful when making such points. I only wanted to point out how such condescension exists, particularly the kind that is not thought through, or examined as well as you have done.

Perdita

But you have to admit they do say "Underlay Underlay" and wear somberos a lot.

No condescention sweets, just stating what I've observed after dealing with those stereotypes and happily finding them to be wrong. What I meant was, I come from a background of peoples who live in the colder climates and the show of love, affection and family support is not something we do well, so I envy what you have. I think people who are from warmer climates tend to enjoy what life has to offer more, they are more spiritual and resourcefull.
Apologies if I have offended you and yours.

I apologise to Perdita and any others I may have offended.

My need to appear clever often overrides my good judgement.

Sigh. We grow too soon old and too late smart.

Min, that's a brilliant AV. Just what did you do?!
