I'm going camping this tomorrow (Saturday morning) and will be spending quite a bit of time at the beach (Woooo! Got a cute new suit... but that's another thread!). I went to the store to buy sunscreen, since I am fair skinned and health conscious, but I found a new product: spray on aerosol sunscreen. I bought it because it sounds so much easier than rubbing it all in... and all the major brands have it. That's a good sign right? But a part of me feels like it can't be as good as the 'ole cream. since you can't slather it on.

Any thoughts?

Any experiences?

Help! I don't want to fry!

Thanks,

I use the spray and have never burned using it and that includes in the Caribbean. I'm very diligent about reapplying it though.

I use it because I can't get the lotion on my back properly and end up burning but I can reach it with the spray.

btw have fun

I live down at the beach and I can assure you beyond the shadow of a doubt that the aerosol sunscreen doesn't work nearly as well as the lotion style sunscreen. Ideally, you should apply it half an hour before you go out so that it has time to absorb into your skin.

as for camping, I strongly suggest the Bulfrog brand of sunscreen. It has great protective qualities AND it has DEET which you will be grateful for when considering the amount of bugs *especially, mosquitoes* in the great outdoors. Best of luck! :)

I love Bullfrog too but not all Bullfrog has the anti insect stuff. I did buy some spray stuff for tennis and I agree for a sunscreen it doesn't work as well as gel or lotion.

I hate the way the spray smells in the house but outside the house the wind can blow it around so you get even less on you plus the cost goes up when you lose that much to the air.

Have fun!

I bought both SPF50 lotion and SPF30 aerosol versions of Coppertone Water&Sweat proof "Sport" sunscreen -- the aerosol for the hard to reach places like the back.

The only drawbacks to the aerosols is that they are generally a lesser SPF than the cream version of the same brand and they tend to cause "speckling" in your tan.

My children and I have used spray-on sunscreen without problems.

I used the spay-on sunscreen and it stained my clothes along with not protecting my skin.

"Spray-on sunscreen" covers a wide variety of products with a wide variation in quality.

Stained clothes from overspray would seem to be a generic problem to most products, but the lack of protection is more likely to be caused by choosing too low an SPF. Here in the high-desert, anything weaker than SPF 30 had better contain painkillers and moisterizers to deal with the sunburn it will permit.

I've just finished my first can of Bullfrog aerosol sunscreen. It was the sport kind and only had an SPF of 30. I was worried about that since I am very fair skinned and generally by SPF 50 or so. I loved it. I never burned. I will continue to buy it.

Aerosol's work great, if you apply it liberally like the creams.

If you just wave it around and fall asleep under the sun your going to be sunburnt with a couple areas that aren't. If you use them like that of course they don't work.

If you spray it all over making sure to get everywhere and rub it in a little so you actually get all of your skin then it works great, assuming it is a high enough SPF.

Of course the best method of using the aerosol is have a partner, and don't just lay out to get a tan. Which oddly enough is the same thing for the creams. ;)

I don't know if you'll get this in time, but I offer it to one and all as a relatively cheap way to protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun. You may not believe it, but it works.

You can make your own cheap vitamin C
sunscreen that protects from the sun’;s
UVA and UVB rays. Simply mix 2 Tablespoons
of widely available vitamin C powder (ascorbic
acid) with 8 ounces of water or an all-natural
skin cream, and apply it to your exposed skin.
You’ll need to reapply this vitamin C
sunscreen every 30 minutes.

So I decided just to try out the aerosol sunscreen and it worked pretty well!! I had a few little areas that I missed, but even they didn't burn too bad at all. I'm convinced the excess misty particles helped me with that. In any case, I'm happy with it.

Thanks for all the advice!
