im working on a story, and i was curious about how you all prefer to spell certain things

do you prefer

magic or magick

demon or daemon

vampire or vampyre

for the record, i prefer the old style spellings personally, but i was curious.

I usually stick with standard dictionary English. The only time I'd use "old" style spelling was in a period piece, and I don't write those, or for the speech of an immortal character of great age (thinking vampire here).

i understand that, although anything i'd do with those sorts of words is a fantasy and thus is basically a medieval period piece.

i often use "magic" and "vampire", but whenever i spell "demon" i always feel like its missing something

I condier a demon and a daemon to be different things.

Of the others the second spellings are sickeningly pretentious.

do many people read non-erotic stuff here? i mean i'm still toying with eroticism in the story, but i wonder.

Demon and daemon are not synonymous in their most common usages in my experience.

Unless it's being used in dialog or in context, spelling magic with a k usually identifies the writer as neo-pagan, spelling vampire with a y usually identifies the writer as a LARPer. :D

And this comes from a guy who has heard Uncle Bonsai attempt to pronounce their album entitled Myn Ynd Wymyn (you have to make a puckering fish-face). :cathappy:

i would use demon as synonym for vice, (as in "I have my personal demons") but when referring to a being it seems to lack "ooomph"

im intrigued by your referring to them as pretentious, how so?

Considering Lit is an erotica site it seems reasonable that on the whole non-erotic stories would have low vote counts. My foray into non-erotic has produced a stupendous total of six votes (counting myself).

see i just think they look prettier, like why, though I was born in the states, i spell "honour" instead of "honor"

They're trying too hard, in a way.

Use normal spellings.

oh yeah i definitely understand that, i was just curious if anyone had experienced decent readership is all.

I think daemon lacks even more "oomph" because the ae is a softer, rounder sound. Traced back it's also a benign part of the psych, IIRC, that Socrates came up with.

I've always felt that the kinds of people that insist on using "magik" and "vampyre" tend to be very holier-than-thou and that may have colored by perception.

i see where your coming from. I think i'll stick with daemon, but go with magic and vampire instead.

thank you all.

I was under the impression that magic and demon weren't exactly the same thing as magick and daemon.

And I have never seen "vampyre" before.

"Magic" needs abracadabra. "Magick" needs spells.
"Daemon" seems more otherworldly than "demon".
"Vampire" vs. "Vampyre": I prefer the first one, but can't really justify it.

I thought "magick" was voodoo and shit, while "magic" is what they teach at Hogwarts.
Hmmm. I thought those are pretty much the same, just on different parts of the spectrum.

If you mean a nasty infernal beastie, or someone/something that acts like one, use "demon."

If you mean a spirit (a la the Shinto kami), or a program that runs services for other programs in the background of UNIX, use "daemon."

At least, that's how I've seen it used commonly in modern fantasy, children's, and computer literature. :D
