What I'd like to know is this... At all costs (believe me) I have protected my password. But what prevents someone from getting it by coming onto the site, knowing your username, and under "forgot your password? click here". This happened to me recently... It was not given out, instead I received an Email notifying me and giving me 24 hours to respond. I let it expire but what if I hadn't seen the email first? What would have happened next? What criteria do the 'powers' use to tell if you are the true person to receive that info or not? Please tell me it is not that easy..... Any regular user would not forget their password anyway...
Thanks!

Unless the person requesting your password also has access to your e-mail, there is no danger of a stranger requesting your password and getting it.

I have forgotten the password to several different sites becuse I haven't gone there in a long time. I have to think a bit to remember my password here, because I use automatic login from my home computer and only enter the password when I'm using another computer.

I've had sites just present my password when I clicked the "forgot your password" link. I much prefer the "send it to your listed e-mail" tactic this site uses. (all you have to do is remember what e-mail to check when you ask for your password -- sometimes harder than remembering the password. ;))

Thanks Harold

I was afraid that's what someone would say.... So the bottom line is the password is not protected at all, is it? What's the point of having one?

The password is protected by the fact that no matter who clicks on the link, the e-mail is sent to YOU.

I could go ask for your password right now, and the only result is that YOU will get an e-mail. Without being able to intercept that e-mail, I will never find out what your password is.

I understand

really, I do... The problem is my email has always been accesible to the person I share a computer with, attaching a password to the account now would only create more problems. Oh well....
Thanks again!

password help

if you dont trust the one that has access to your email us outook express or get a hot mail account and use ppasswords there and have all your info you want kept private sent there that is the only way and go change your password every couple of months

thinking too....

I have thought about this.. a person can hit search and go back and read every word I have ever wrote.. so even if a person doesn't have your password... they can still tell what you have been doing. and where you have been going.. I can see where a person might need this for there own privite use but for every body to be able to do that.. jsut doesn't seem right... thanks Magnolia

Why would you need search to find out what you've posted -- you posted it didn't you?

Someone else who doesn't know what you've posted sometimes needs search to find an overview of where you're coming from and what your opinions are. If the views and information you voluntarily post in a public forum are a security problem, then why are you posting such views and information?

yes....

If a person wants to know about me they can read my profile.. and what ever I have wrote in the current thread.. what I am trying to say is... people may not know my password.. but they know my name.. and every thing I write is not for everybodies eyes... I really do not feel that we need the search button... if anyone needs to know about me... come ask.... Magnolia

If what you have to say is "not for everybody's eyes" then why are they posted on a public forum. -- Search dosn't find PMs, just what you post in public forums.

FWIW, we definitely need the search function. Without it, I need to repeat myself every time someone asks the same dumb question that I've answered several times before. 99% of the time I use the search function, it is to find one of my own posts.
