sorry if i'm taking this too seriously, but i believe the movie is based on a novel of the same title by jose saramago and it was published several years ago...meaning it was conceived of well before the causes of current events took root.

saramago has a fantastic imagination. and he's like 90 or something.

A recent "Hamlet" was set in contemporay NYC. Filmmakers frequently adapt old material to comment upon the present. And the EU has been around longer than the novel. Still, I don't think the story is a political metaphor for the rifts in the EU as much as it makes for a nifty thread title.
