I hate to generalize southerners, hopefully this question wont come across that way.

There is a lot of history behind it. We've played Auburn 110 times since 1892. But I'd make the case that football is big in much of the country. The big 10, the big 12. Many of these states don't have pro teams to complete with. The pac 10 is big time as well but a lot more completing interests on the west coast.
It's also how we were brought up. Baseball, football, and even basketball was a huge part of my childhood. I still have regrets that I didn't play in high school. I was on the golf team which I loved but I think I would have made a fine kicker. But I only weighed about 135 soaking wet so maybe it was good I didn't play. My brother blew out his knee on his first game. First kick off even. But it was a blessing. It kept him out of Vietnam.

I grew up in a very small town in southern Ohio (Ironton, Ohio, Pop. 7K) For us, football is everything.. from peewee football to high school and Ohio State Buckeyes. It seems to me, that at least there, if you're a guy, the only way to get out is either to join the military or play football.
It's also something that brings the family together and forms extended families. Everyone, it seems, goes to the Friday night games to support the high school team. We get together to watch the Buckeyes on Saturdays.
I know that doesnt really answer anything.. maybe gives some insight into a possible reason

I think the whole fanatical football thing is just ridiculous. I'm not and never will be a spectator sport kind of person. I can barely stand watching sports when someone I care about is playing. Thank God for books!
My family growing up was far more concerned with other things than football.

There are many stories surrounding the origins of Auburn's battle cry, "War Eagle." The most popular account involves the first Auburn football game in 1892 between Auburn and the University of Georgia. According to the story, in the stands that day was an old Civil War soldier with an eagle that he had found injured on a battlefield and kept as a pet. The eagle broke free and began to soar over the field, and Auburn began to march toward the Georgia end-zone. The crowd began to chant, "War Eagle" as the eagle soared. After Auburn won the game, the eagle crashed to the field and died but, according to the legend, his spirit lives on every time an Auburn man or woman yells "War Eagle!" The battle cry of "War Eagle" also functions as a greeting for those associated with the University. For many years, a live golden eagle has embodied the spirit of this tradition. The eagle was once housed on campus in The Eagle's Cage (which was the second largest single-bird enclosure in the country), but the aviary was taken down in 2003 and the eagle moved to a nearby raptor center. The eagle, War Eagle VI (nicknamed "Tiger"), is trained to fly around the stadium before every home game to the delight of fans.

It's one of the few times I have ever pulled for Auburn. The cocks have a tough road ahead. If we beat Tennessee and that's a big if, we could end up playing LSU with the winner playing for the national championship. That's a lot to ask from bullpups but we can dream.

Ever watched folks at a High School (or, I assume, College as well...I'm not paying $50 a ticket to watch something that's televised that I really don't care about) football game? Suddenly, everyone on one side is your buddy who will high five you when the team does well or commiserate when things go poorly. You all have a common "enemy"...the other team and their fans...who you can yell at, strive to beat, etc and yet when it's all said and done, the sane ones will cross over to the other side, shake hands and state "good game" no matter who wins. It's (usually) friendly competition and nothing more. Entire families will go to the game to see each other, meet with friends and bond over a common 'goal.'Of course, there are the nutcases who slash tires, key cars, destroy the other team's buses, shoot other folks, etc over a stupid football game, but there are nutcases everywhere.
