I was just reading a thread where people wrote love snippets. I was thinking of one to add, and all I could think of was my songs. That leads me to this...

Is there anyone else here that writes music? I love to write songs. I sit at my piano and play madly for hours. Words just come to me out of nowhere and a song emerges.
Mine are like those bad poems people write after breakups and when they are in love. Every one of my songs has some strong emotional drive inside of it.

I thought it would be nice to talk to someone about it that perhaps shares my same passion. I haven't realy thought about it before, but I suddenly have the urge to compare passions.

Funny thing about passions, I admire anyone who has one no matter what that passion happens to be, as long as it IS. People with passions inspire me and my own.

Ah, but music is the topic of this thread, so if you write songs please post a note!

I've tried my hand at songs.. I have numerous started, but I have as of yet to finish one, or like any of my own un-completed ones.

Would love to read some of yours though.

I've written tons of songs. At one time my band had over 150 original songs that we knew and I wrote about 99.9% of them. We're working in a new bass player on our old songs now and then we're going to start working on material for a new album, so I'll be a songwriting fool here in a month or so.

Thanks Tolyk. I'll send you some sometime. Not as good without the music but still good.

And Boota, that's great! I'm so envious. Me secret dream in life is to be a songwriter. I don't want to sing them, just write them. Mind you I love to sing. I'm helplessly addicted to karaoke at my local sports bar, and I've been told that I am a good singer. I just can't sing and play well at the same time.

I wish I played more instruments. I want to find an old acoustic guitar at a pawn shop or something and teach myself how to play. What's stopping me is that I'm left handed (and poor). So for now I'll just have my trusty piano.

I've really thought about recording a few to just see. At least to just have to say I did something, ya know. My friend's band said they would help me with the music, its just getting the time and money for studio time.

Tol, I'd love to hear some of your unfinished songs, maybe I can help you finish some.

Boota, good luck with your band! Where are you from? My best friend is the drummer of a band here. I love to go hear them play. Let me know when your cd comes out.

Thanks guys for posting!

CheeryOrchid,

I think it would be a good idea for you to take your friend's up on the offer if you get the chance. Believe me, I know all about the limitations of time and money on recording. That's where I am at right now. But, you'll have an experience that you'll never forget, as well as a recording of your work. Who knows how far you can take that?

Thanks for the good wishes with my band. I thought I was done with a music back in January. I was going to give it up and just pursue writing for a while. As it turned out, every reporter who interviewed me about my book spent more time asking me about my band. LOL. Then we were approached about doing an album with the intent of getting it placed on the Grammy ballot. A guy we know is on the Grammy committee and he wants to help us make the ballot. It would be cool to be a little band from Kokomo, Indiana with no record deal and to get nominated for a Grammy. :) I could get into that.

Good luck with your musical pursuits.

You are quiet an interesting man. Sounds like you are on the cusp of many great things. I hope it all turns out well for you. What's the name of your band so we'll know to look for you?

I hope I can get my stuff together soon. I haven't written anything real in a long time, just these stories here on occasion. Just enough to remember how to type. Too busy doing other things. But you never know til you try.

Goodluck again.

I can write melodies and whole tracks, but lyrics for me get tricky because whenever I write them, they seem so vapid and disjointed with the music.

Just my experience attempting to write lyrics.

Music and melodies I could improve on. Lyrics just come out of me. I can start playing a melody and the lyrics just come out of my brain. It's like I have no control over what they will be. I can hear music and put words to it.
My melodies are very basic. I'm self taught musician so I guess my ah attributes in that area are minimum. But they do fine for playing piano in the dark :).
