Your little work scenario isn't quite true. Both wouldn't be fired for arguing and calling each other names. If one started spewing slurs at the other during an argument then he would be fired, if the second responded in kind then they both would be fired. Any physical contact is also cause for termination even if it is in retribution "He hit me first!" is no excuse. Both would be fired.

You're right about cultural norms. Thailand has a third gender class ("Ladyboys"), as does India. In Europe the Castrato, and in China Eunichs occupied unique positions in society.
