James waded out of the cold water, feeling much more refreshed. He wasn't sure of the time, but he knew that it was well after midnight. He had barely slept over the last few nights, first because he was with Anne, and then the next night because he couldn't get Claire out of his mind.
He entered his cabin and collapsed onto the bed in exhaustion. Much to his surprise and relief, he quickly drifted off into a deep, dreamless sleep. The next thing James knew, morning had come. The bright sun was streaming through his windows, and he could tell that he had slept later than normal.
James dressed quickly and headed towards the barn to see if the other workers had left him anything for breakfast. His growling stomach reminded him that he had eaten very little over the past two days. Fortunately, the house maid who brought breakfast to the men every morning had managed to save James some food, and he hungrily shoveled it down.
"My my, you sho are hungry, Mr. Aultman," the maid said with a bit of teasing in her voice. James had expected word to get out that Ms. Anna Houston had come to visit him the night before, so he wasn't surprised at the knowing tone of her voice. What she didn't know, however, was that the rumor of Anna's visit paled in comparison to what had actually happened. If the maids knew what their boss had been doing just hours earlier, they likely would have fainted from shock.
James suddenly realized that the thought of Claire had not crossed his mind until that moment. In his haste to join the other workers in the days tasks he hadn't even remembered everything that happened. Even thinking back on it, he almost felt like the entire night had been some sort of weird dream.
James thanked the maid for breakfast before hurrying off toward the dock. He knew that Phillip was still in Charleston, and there was no one else to assign the men their day's work. Of course, they all knew what needed to be done, so he felt sure they were doing ok.
Then James remembered his promise to Phillip that he didn't need to worry about being in trouble with Claire for going to Charleston without permission. Fair Oaks was nearly as important to Phillip as it was to him, so James decided that he would have to go explain things to Claire right away. And besides, he was curious to see how she would act towards him. He set off towards the house, a sly smile once again on his face.
