The formal sound of Anna's words stung, but James knew that it was the truth. The way things were right now, this was the only way they could be together. He looked into Anna's eyes, brushing his fingers lightly across her cheek. Even though he wouldn't say the words, he hoped that she could see in his eyes how he felt about her.
James decided it would be best if they let things cool off for the night. As much as he wanted to have his way with Anna once again, there were just too many emotions flowing. He kissed her again on the lips, this time softly, as if to tell her "Good night" without words.
He pulled her to him again, her head resting against his chest. Before long, he heard her breathing slow and knew that she was asleep. Son after, James slipped into a deep sleep as well.
Some time later, James awoke. The sun was just beginning to peek through the window. As quietly as possible, James eased out of Anna's bed. Standing there, he looked down at her and couldn't get over how beautiful she was. At times like this, he often doubted whether or not he was making the right decision by staying at Fair Oaks.
Pushing the thoughts out of his mind, James crept out of Anna's bedroom. He retrieved his clothes from in front of the fireplace and got dressed. James added some logs to the fire and stoked it until the logs were engulfed in flames before closing the screen. It was a small gesture, but at least Anna would wake to a warm, although empty, house.
James left Anna's house the way he had come, ducking down the back alley to avoid being seen by any of the neighbors. Little did he know that his presence was already known and was making it's way through the grapevine of gossip.
James made his way to the market area to take care of the business that Mrs. Allen had sent him handle. She had told him to be back by noon, and James should have explained to her that he would have to wait for high tide that evening just as he had when he had left the day before. But for whatever reason, he not told her. Perhaps he just wanted to see the look on her face and hear the anger in her voice when he showed up back at Fair Oaks hours after she told him to return.
