Afghanistan's troubles began when the U.S. began covertly arming and stirring up the most backward, reactionary, women-hating elements of Afghan society, the "mujahadeen," against the leftist government which took power in 1978. Once that government was ousted in 1991, the U.S. government promptly forgot about Afghanistan. Chaos reigned from 1991 to 1996 as rival warlords fought it out. The Taliban were brutal and repressive, but at least restored some semblance of stability by conquering most of the country. Now the U.S. government has ousted them, and again turned its back on Afghanistan, refusing to help solve the problems it created. As a result, Afghanistan has again returned to chaos and anarchy. The hell which is Afghanistan today is mainly, if not entirely, the fault of U.S. imperialism.

Which was in itself a puppet government set up by the Soviet Union. Hardly the bastion of freedom and peace.

The Taliban were brutal and repressive, but at least restored some semblance of stability by conquering most of the country.

So? That's like saying Hitler wasn't so bad because he did stabilize the German government. Nice as it is, it's meaningless. An unstable good government is better than a stable bad one.

Now the U.S. government has ousted them, and again turned its back on Afghanistan, refusing to help solve the problems it created. As a result, Afghanistan has again returned to chaos and anarchy. The hell which is Afghanistan today is mainly, if not entirely, the fault of U.S. imperialism.

Open a dictionary: imperialism, meaning empire, meaning conquest and annexation. We did no such thing, as you plainly attest to. Had we been imperialistic, we would have just assumed power, or, at the very least, set up a puppet government of our own instead of leaving them to their own devices.

The fact that they couldn't succeed at establishing a secure freedom-respecting government has nothing to do with any of America's supposed "imperialism."
