So, I'm having a bit of a problem here: I'm working on the next installment of my cyberpunk story which is set to include a nasty bit of graphic violence. I would like to ask for a volunteer with experience in this area to have a look at my draft and let me know if that particular bit may or may not clash with Lit's content guidelines. I have checked the section on sex and violence and can confirm that no one dies while having sex, but I think this may be a special case nonetheless.

Anyone up for this?

Oh, and Merry Christmas, everyone! :)

Is the violence related in any way to sex? If it's part of the plot and not related to the sex, there's not much of a bar to jump.

The bar gets even lower in a setting that's obviously not the real world, such as cyberpunk.

Laurel doesn't seem to bat an eyelash at plot-related violence very often.

If it's happening during sex, that's a different kettle o' fish.

No, just shortly after. I knew this could cause trouble, so I've started the scene in a way that everyone knows both participants had sex, but there's no fucking (or the lesbian equivalent) involved.

That's not necessarily an issue. I've had sex scenes that get dramatically interrupted by some pretty serious violence pass without problem.

Sexual violence is really the only sticky point. ( especially in a fantasy setting )

Here's a couple of examples that have passed the initial examination, and follow-up checks when I've posted edits.

Tharsas ignored the smoke curling from the flesh of his hand, and his clothing. The electrical jolts, and the resulting pain, didn’t even register in his mind. He grabbed the ring, and jerked it roughly off Peronelle’s finger, hurling it across the room. As soon as the ring left her finger, the protective magic it had brought into being failed.

Tharsas bent her wrist back with his blackened hand. His still smoking hand now wept pus, and blood as well. Drawing back his other arm, he backhanded his stepmother with all his strength, and shoved her to the floor.

Tharsas tilted his head, and his lip twitched in a half smile, as he listened to Peronelle's scream trail off into a wheeze, the air being pushed from her lungs. He chuckled as he heard the cracks of her ribs breaking, and burst into gales of laughter as he heard the louder cracks of her other bones snapping, and her skull bursting.

Waving his hand in a flourish, Tharsas banished the magic. His stepmother's corpse collapsed into a broken, twisted heap on the floor, at the foot of the wall.

"You are avenged, Father," Tharsas whispered, as he stared at the pulped remains of Peronelle.

( Pardon the overabundance of commas. It's due for another edit LOL )

Needless to say, plot-related, non-sexual violence isn't much of an issue. I'd just keep writing and not worry about it.

If you want to send me a PM, I'll look it over, but everything you're posting here is screaming "green light" at me.

I have vampire stories where there is death during the sex, so I'm not sure where an edge is here. Maybe if "real" people are the only ones involved?

Even the snuff restriction has leeway when it comes to fantastic worlds and creatures.

I would imagine that there's a pretty fine line on snuff, though. If I remember correctly, you've said the victims in yours were in ecstasy as they died. If the victim is struggling, I don't see it passing muster in any category except Erotic Horror.

Even there, I'd say that's an iffy one. The more graphic it is, the less likely it will survive vetting.

Write what you want.

The "rules" regarding violence are a joke. As long as you're not involving underage you will probably be okay.

Your only issue maybe category. Rape or non consensual sex(the site seems to think they are two different things) should go in non consent, but if the violence is not sexual in nature then you don't necessarily have to go the non consent route, but can put it where ever you see fit.

And then there is BDSM, that kind of violence seems okay during sex.

Nope, my scene in question was more the "rip your throat out with bare teeth and masturbate covered in your blood afterwards" kind of violence. After some quick behind-the-scenes counseling (thanks, Dark!), I've decided to dial it back a few notches, just to be safe. And a litle less "torture porn" style.

Yeah, that might be a bit too much for even hardcore readers, unless it in the loving wives category and she was cheating on him.

The only violence I portrait is the usual kind. Shooting people, stabbing people.

Although I did have a husband commit premeditated murder of his wife while she was having sex with another man and woman. He killed them all, then sat and waited for the police to show up.

It's actually still up here at lit. Reality

I got halfway through the story before I realized I've read that one before. It's a good story!

Yes, basically. I'm pretty sure he's got more than anyone else.

Gadzooks Zeb_Carter; I've never seen so many green E icons. I assume that means you tickled Laurel's fancy. Is that what a green E means?

I guess. I told a time travel story where there was no travel. The male protag knew what was going to happen in the future.

I guess Laurel took a fancy to the story.

To bad she only tagged 15 of the 16 chapters I posted. When I got the first I was astounded, when the 16th didn't get one, I felt cheated. Go figure.

It really needed a rewrite, it was my second try and is a little clunky, so I took a shot and rewrote it and published it at Fido under a new cover...Aftermath.

You can include death and violence as long as it supports a story and it isn't gruesome.

I've seen erotic stories here which feature people being shot to death. But, it was part of a story which featured crime.

Have you read Laurel's guild lines in the Story Ideas forum?

. I tend to be more lenient when a scene is in the service of a plot. Movies often have horrific scenes where a man's family is killed in front of him, but it's done so to horrify the viewer and to show character motivation (revenge). This is different from scenes which are put there for no other reason than with the expectation that the reader will be thrilled to watch another human being suffer/be disfigured/be killed.

I'm pleased to see that my self-censored chapter went through greenlighting without a hitch. All's well that ends well.

I'm adapting a story now that ends with lots of mayhem and death. My quandary is deciding on a category. There's no same-sex, no Groups, no BDSM, no romance, just non-sexual abuse and revenge, and one instance of noncon (which ends in over-the-top gory death, not gratuitous). The mayhems and deaths are NOT described in gruesome detail. I guess it'll fit into noncon.

@MSTarot:

Enjoyed your Cyberpunk stories very much. They reminded me that I could do with a lot more dirt. They also reminded me of the good Cyberpunk 2020 days. I need to dig out my books and pillage some more :) With Nero's antics and a massive showdown brewing, the world won't be quite the same once the dust settles, so I'd better prepare.

Sounds like Noncon to me.
