Some guys are just begging for an ass-kicking.

Full class tonight - Shotokan karate.

Sensei worked us hard on katas. Katas are choreographed fundamentals (for lack of a better explanation). They can be intricate and they require a great deal of concentration to perform correctly while in a group so you don't get your teeth kicked in.

Anyway, we had a new member this evening. He showed up for the second hour of class (missed most of the hard work).

Male.

Arrogant.

He looked down his nose at the female class members (even though his own skills are merely adequate).

Dickhead.

I never got the chance to spar with him this evening. He wasn't interested in fighting with da womenfolk.

Coward.

Of course, the men Sensei paired him with had no trouble handling him. And I think they were actually being nice.

I just hope he shows up next week because I really, really wanna play.

:)

Sarah: Very much with you. Hope you get the chance to kick his arse next time kumite comes around.

Having said that, I don't like sparring with females. It's not the thought that they are lesser or on a different strata to me, I just find it very difficult to strike girls. Call me sexist if you want, but my body refuses to co-operate when I'm fighting a girl.

Go teach him a new word, Sweet.

Humility.

I think Jozxyqk would be a better one if he's ducking out of the physical work of karate. (For non-rabid Red Dwarf followers: Jozxyqk is the cat word for the sound made when a male's sexual organs get trapped or squished, like say, between lazy man's hipbone and sarah's foot).

I never really thought of that, actually.

We're pretty uni-sex in class these days so I forget that I'm a girl (and the men in class have no trouble throwing punches at me).

But - I kick pretty well. And legs are longer than arms.

;)

What if he's better?

If he's not in full training and in a comparable strata to her, then I guarantee Sarah will be better. Kumite (sparring) in karate is often about stamina and speed and anyone who skips the beasting physical workouts at the start of sessions will quickly get picked off by anyone in full training.

It's a good question.

I'd like to find out the answer.

Then he can't be better than you. Only more skilled, and I have doubts about that. If he had the skills he would have had the discipline to show up on time.

It's unisex in our class, so I have been forced to spar with ladies before and I can do it when forced. I find it very difficult though and am often not at my best.

Guess it's twenty years of conditioning reacting within me.

I don't sound very humble myself this evening. That is quite wrong - goes against the entire philosophy.

(I just really hate it when some men have to be jerks to women in that way!)

Not entirely. The Orientals have their own form of chivalry. And if he does not have the requisite discipline and humility, it needs to be taught.

Anyone who spends any amount of time in martial arts training will be taught that, intentionally or not.

(I originally typed marital arts, a common typo for me, and now I can't stop laughing about the fact that the same holds true there. Gawd, I need sleep! :D)

I really love marital arts.

;)

I didn't mean to step on any toes.

I do publicity for Mississippi Center for Martial Arts, so I've gotten to learn a lot about Shotokan--most interesting to me is the idea that the dickhead in class isn't less good because he's a dickhead. There's one kid in one of the classes (I like to watch) that's a total prick, but he /is/ better than most of the rest of the class.

...its an interesting question. Raises a lot of interesting issues. Should he be removed because he could hurt the progress (confidence) of the others?

Just a ramble, sorry.

Unless its MMA. They've got their own thing going on, it seems.

I won't pretend to know fuck-all about it, but my opinion would be no. Unless one of the ways in which he is a dickhead is that he berates other classmates or intentionally injures them, etc, and then I would say yes. Simply being more skilled and disliked would not be a valid reason.

Joe - you didn't step on any toes -

But you ask if a student should be removed from class if he is better than all the others?

My question would be - why is that student remaining in a class that is too easy for him? If the student wishes to learn and improve his skills, he must be challenged.

He is wasting his time, and probably annoying the other students.

My opinion, anyway!

And a valid oppinion it is. But allow me to reitterate. Ther is a difference in being better and being more skilled. He may be more skilled, but his attitude keeps him from being better.

It has been my experience that those with cocky attitudes do not improve much on where they are because that attitude prevents them from learning any more. They believe they know more and there is nothing futher for them to learn. They remain only to because they see themselves as "King of the Hill".

Yes, I can see that.

And that's why I believe a more difficult class would be a good experience for a know-it-all kid.

It would certainly slap down that cocky attitude, anyway! ;)

I haven't had those experiences, really. I have a friend, Philosophy John. Went to college for years with Philosophy John. Arrogant guy. Brash. But smart (and an excellent logician). Cocky. Sure of himself. I found out this past summer that Philosophy John is a two time Olympian and a Shotokan triple freaky blackbelt and such.

To talk to him about fighting and the like, he's very King of the Hill-esque. But, him and a few others (mostly MMA folks) are my only outlet for Martial Arts information. I am, in that respect, limited.

sweetsubsarahh:
I do not have experience in Shotokan Karate. I do have a good background in Kenpo Karate, Aikido, Jow Ga and a couple of Northern TCMA styles.

The best way to keep a better opponent off you is low level kicks to the knees as you move out of the line of attack. You should wear shoes (to protect the bruise on your foot if for no other reason). Also, shoes make a low level kick into a real weapon.

Lateral movement is a better way to avoid an attack than backward movement.

Keep your hands up and protect yourslef at all times! Good luck. Let us know how it all turns out.
