i found this interesting on a board.
someone brought up the idea of doing background checks on people, by getting their social security number.

i am asking now. if this is wrong to give out to whomever....

why are dommes asking me to send them a picture of my driver's license to prove i am who i say?
my number is on the license.

any ideas?

is this a new scam?

thanks

The Social Security Number is very useful to identity thieves and other folks with crime on the mind.

I know that my state, Iowa, routinely does not use the SSN on its driver's license - a person has to request a favor to let their driver's license number be the same as their social security number. I would think this is true in other states as well. SSN is simply too important to put on your checks or driver's license... although both were common practices 20 or 30 years ago.

I think requesting the driver's license of someone you plan on having in your home, or being intimate with is a reasonable precaution. I suppose another form of photo ID would work too. <shrug> But its nice to know that a person really is named what they claim is their name.

I don't know about a scam, but I wouldn't do it. At least not early in a relationship. Ever hear of identity theft?

If they want proof, put a piece of tape over your address, phone number, and drivers license number. Then take a picture of it, and show them. That's all information they don't need to know, and if they insist, then they obviously aren't asking for identity reasons. I mean it's not like you're arranging a meeting, or anything like that. All they want is proof that you aren't lying to them.

OMG There are states that put your ssn on your drivers license? That's just flat out stupid! In Oregon they NEVER put your ssn on your drivers license. Same with Washington, and I'm pretty sure California. I don't think they would even if you asked. I used to work at Meier and Frank, and I took people's drivers license's all the time for checks, and never once did I see an SSN on it.

Weird.

Oh, also put tape over your SSN and your last name.

I totally agree with everything Graceanne said.

I have a friend who had identity theft happen to her. The way she found out? She supposedly was in a wreck some 400 miles away while she was at work and guess who all the insurance companies and lawyers were coming after? What a mess. Never ever ever give your social or drivers license number out to people you do not know.

Wow, I had no idea that states did that. You really really don't want people to get your SSN.

There is a company on the web (inteliese I think) that charges like 50 bucks to run a back ground check using a SSN, give you full name, date of birth, last know phone number and address, and a full crime check. So if I was you I would be gaurding your SSN tighter than your family jewels.

Yes, I agree. But there used to be more of an innocence about its use. 25 years ago, the DMV of Iowa urged folks to use their social security number as their driver's license number because it would be easy to remember.

And stores often asked for SSN if a person was writing personal check, so people had their SSN printed on their checks. And banks would ask if you wanted it printed on your checks or not.

Yeah, but since then it's been ruled against the law to put use someone's SSN as their ID#. My childrens health insurance company changed their ID#'s cause of that ruling.

When I got my Hawaii state driver's license it had my SSN as my ID number. I also have a dependents ID for the military and it has that number also. I should probably ask for a new number since a few years ago I lost my ID card while romping in the desert on base. Though I haven't given it much though. When I go to renew my license (which will also change it to Hawaii again) I'll have to remember to request a different ID than my SSN. I agree not the kind of information I want people having. I would send her a photo copy or pic of a different ID card, like a student ID or something that doesn't have your SSN on it.

There is nothing wrong in finding out who it is your meeting, but I work at a police department and there is ALOT of ID theft going on nowsdays. There are at least 5 reports of it a day in the one county I work in alone. I wouldnt give anyone to much information about myself. If someone knows your name, address, SS#, and could make a decent fake ID it wouldnt be hard to make a cell phone or even credit card in someone elses name then order crap over the internet or go around chargeing it to someone else. Other things I can think of, is that people had unpaid traffic tickets or missed court dates in their name they didnt know about.

CDL holders are required to have their SSN on their license, which sucks.

Back to the OP...

I personally wouldn't divulge any personal information to a "potential" Domme. I understand that Dommes get all types of players, and wannabes, but for them to ask for private information right off the bat sounds like either 1) A poorly thought out plan to screen potentials, or 2) SCAM!!!!!.

If they insist on seeing your drivers license, I'd go get a state ID for about $5.00 without my SSN on it, blank out your address, and then send that to them. If all they want is proof that you are who you claim to be, this should be good enough.

My step dad is a truck driver, and his SSN is not on his license. I really think this is not legal. The Supreme Court ruled that no one can use your SSN as an ID number. Ever.

The reason you want to be careful about your SSN and address is for this reason exactly: What does it take to get a state ID? All it takes is a SSN number, and proof of address (which is easy to do). And I'm going to bet it's not hard to make up a fake SSN card. So someone gets your SSN, they make up a fake SSN card on their computer. Then they mail something to themselves with your name on it. Then they take both things down to the DMV, and get a license or state ID or whatever. Now they have your name and their face on an ID, and you are screwed. And not in a good way.

I should have qualified that it's required in the state of Indiana, but it wasn't in Illinois. I don't know about his state.

LOL Nothing wrong with being trusting. I wish I was still somewhat trusting like that. I was raised to know that all people are out for number one, and I'm not it. I never have been. *shrugs*

Cause it's possible you're batfuckingnuts.

Good point, Never.

An age check / request is a wise move.

It could be an FBI agent asking to be your sub
posing as an underage male/female. Scary thought.

Regarding the SS# used for Driver's licenses.
It's been a common practice in many states for years.

That's why I said to put masking tape over pertinant information, like your address, SSN and last name, copy it, and then send her that copy. I can see the domme wanting proof of ID and age, but the birthdate on your ID will suffice for that, and the picture will prove you are who you say you are. If they want any more proof than that, then they'r either a) VERY PARANOID; in which case run, or b) identity theifs.
