The only way I'm getting close to that type of money is by selling drugs. Sad but true. Here they call it a good job, if you are making 15+an hour. I got in a argument with one of my cousins over that. He thought he was balling because he is making about 17 a hour., working at housing. I'm like brah, you barely making over 30k a year before taxes. And when they take taxes you not even making 30k a year. You live with your mother, so you are not paying rent. That's the only reason you can afford 250$ sneakers, 400$ shoes and 200$ jeans.. Because you don't have no other way to spend your money.. You have no responsibilities. Motherfucker, you ain't balling, you just getting by.
In the news today AMAZON is now using robots to move freight and orders about their shipping centers. The handwritings on the wall for Americas dummies and slackers.
Not exactly new news, warehouse automation has been going on since the '70's. Vertical stacking cranes, wire guided retrieval/delivery vehicles, etc. The big boys have been on that path for decades. What is different these days is that much smaller concerns are now able to afford these automation devices and the fact that the earlier devices were single purpose whereas the robotics evolution is creating multi-purpose devices.

The First Lady had some things to say about race with the benefit of a fine, expensive Princeton education:

This is college level work? Ivy-league college level work?
I would LOVE to see anything actually turned in by Barry.
What I found interesting in her little thesis was how she explains that she became even more aware of how underprivileged she is because of her race WHILE attending one of the most prestigious schools in the country on what I will bet was a full-ride scholarship. Given the level of "scholarship" of her thesis I am guessing it was not merit that got her into Princeton where they could teach her how underprivileged she is.
Kind of circular reasoning.
In another thread, Candi is talking about what she "knows' about privilege from "studying" it, and another person is rejecting a posters real life experience and suggesting they "take a class" to understand privilege.
How about we all are humans we leave names and race off the admissions forms and see who gets admitted and who does not.
OK smooth, I've been following the thread and your exchanges with SR and others. Rather than put words in your mouth let me make an observation and just ask you whether I'm off base or not.
More than a few people here have blamed poverty as the primary factor in why so many young black men turn to crime. I take issue with that view, I don't think that poverty is the prime factor. I've been looking more and more at a lack of moral underpinnings and guidance as the prime factor. But your posts have given me another insight as to what might be the biggest contributing factor and that factor is "hope."
It seems to me that what you're describing is a community of young men that have given up hope. Hope of ever being able to advance in society and to being able to climb the financial ladder to success. And the thought that you might be right, if you agree with my observation, is scary because you are describing a community of young men that just don't care one way or another. Having the hope that there's an alternative path to success is one of the dampers on taking a path of self-destructive activity. Without hope crime is the only path to the obtaining of one's dreams.

Now that you mention it, this do make a lot of sense. I know I'm hopeless and lost, and I committed crimes. All the rest of the people I know are hopeless and lost, and commit crimes. So I see you point. I feel like the only way I'm going to make it is by being the biggest drug dealer in my city, a lot of times. And I'm fighting hard to get that thought out of my head now. Especially when you come from hustling, and try to work a dead end job. You feel like shit, busting your ass for pennies. So feeling hopeless is a big factor. But poverty is a big factor too.

Automation and robotics will soon make the slackers and mentally challenged more of a burden.
There isn't that much demand for burdens. Those people will have to step up and do something with their life or be kicked aside. Most will be kicked aside.

They can kick back, you know.
Yes, poverty is a factor, but I disagree that it is the key factor. You can be poor, but with hope you can see brighter days ahead. But without hope there is nothing and even if you're wealthy you can be without hope and do very destructive things.........like suicide.
Look at the illegal immigrants coming in, the ones that are going to be taking the starting rung jobs. You have no idea what poverty is smooth until you visit where they're coming from. They will eagerly take those jobs and work their ass off because they have HOPE! Of course that will change for most of their children and/or grandchildren. And when they become hopeless what are we to do? Let in several millions more?
What government program in existence, or can be dreamed up, will restore hope smooth? Raise the minimum wage? See JBJ's posts re. robots. Raising the minimum wage will only cause employers to automate even faster. The automation manufacturers and automation integrators will enjoy a windfall. And the jobs that will remain in the service sector, housekeeping/janitorial, etc.? Well, those are going to be filled by the new immigrants.
How can hope be restored once lost?

All things being relative, they will accept many more layers of oppression that Americans wouldn't accept, as long as it isn't as bad as that they came here to escape. That's the downside for the future, and the plan.

Not even you believe that.
