So now that Detroit has filed for bankruptcy...

I'm just waiting for the RWCJ to start a dozen threads telling us about how it's all Obama's fault.

Of course.

There must be at least two dozen "news" sites working on such an angle right now, and we'll see them all C&P'ed in short order.

detriot = shithole

Detroit is indeed a shithole. It was a shithole thirty years ago, long before Obama............or Bush.

Detroits long slow slide into oblivion started back in the 70's with the people electing one incompetent, spendthrift, administration after another. No one is particularly surprised at the bankruptcy announcement, and few outside of the city limits even care.

GM had a chance to get out of the city in the late 80's, even threatened to do so, now it's too late.

There is a chance here for Islandman though. that area of Michigan used to be some pretty damn productive farmland and farmland is worth a hell of a lot more per acre than 90% of the acreage in the former city of Detroit. The cleanup won't be cheap though.

Well, this is what happen when you combine the awesome power of unions with a democrat leadership

The Unions are a blip on the radar as a cause for bankruptcy. Lets go back to good ol Colman Young, and throw in the lack of taxes being paid and the abandonment of the city.

I saw this coming a year ago.

Well I lived in the suburbs up there for about 18 yrs..

My dad was from NC,and went there after WW2.He had a couple yrs of college before he went up there. Then he got a 1 yr transmission mechanic certificate.
He said it was 50% automated, back in the 50s,and they d still lay him off ,every other year.

He ended up with a broken back, they played a mean game of musical chairs, where the jobs got progressively tougher. They paid for his back operation, which spliced a piece of bone across 3 vertebrae, and gave him 5 grand as a out of court settlement.

He felt he was pretty much blackballed ,for the rest of his life. Now,they have 4 times the population, and automation is up to 95% now.I never worked the auto factories myself....

His strategy was to go back to school, took a teachers major with a specialty of art.The G I Bill was set up to pay about as much as minimum wage,as long as you got at least a C avg.

He racked up apx 9 yrs of college credits at Wayne State U in Detroit, part of Michigan State U.,and switched majors to city street planning ,for a couple of those yrs.\

He never got a degree, but took the accreditation exam in Miami FL ,to get his teachers certificate, with the Dade Co School Board.Anyone can take the exam, and it confers a certificate for life,in lots of Southern States,as long as you have 3 1/2 to 4 yrs of college credits, and pass the exam...

He never made it as a teacher though.Mostly its a female racket, and the minority thing.Rich people flock to teaching for a career in more affluent areas, too.Auuuhhhhhh! He taught night school part time ,a couple of yrs though.

PS,Paul Simon had a song called Pappa Hobo, with some lyrics like:"Its carbon and monoxide, that old Detroit perfume, that hangs on the hwy in the morning ,and it lays you down by noon...."

My ma was born in the Detroit Genl Hospital, her ma and pa had a small restaurant, about 6 mile /on Woodward ave,up til the late 50s.Her parents were naturalized Canadians. When the restaurant sold,it was turned into a pkg liquor store, and was sucessful from then onwards,as a good location.
My Grandparents lived in their own Duplex,over/under,about 8 and a half mile rd and john R...Over about 9 blocks from the Hazel Park Horserace Track...

I went to Oakland Community Collegeand got a 2 yr mental health social work AASc para professional degree.Detroit Metro area encompasses 3 counties including Oakland ,to the North.Macomb to the East, and Wayne County is what the Detroit city limits is in...I was a B avg overall. The college had 6 campuses, with 26 thousand students per year. All credits I had Transferred to Oakland U ,part of the U of Michigan.

If they go bankrupt so what? This is not a snarky reply. I am asking. They overspent and now they have to deal with it. Real life is hard.

Back in WW2,they switched from autos to war manufacturing.

Maybe they should be running mass production ,on giant electric generating windmills ,among other diverse products /besides autos...

so what?

$20 billion is held by PENSION FUNDS, who will not get paid

those people will lose $$$

and make borrowings for other more expensive

that's SO WHAT:cool:

Heres some intell for them:I saw a progam some years back that had a French Car run off Compressed Air,no combustion. It had like 4 tanks in the floor made out of carbon fiber,so if it was wrecked, the tanks would harmlessly split, and not explode, releasing the pressurized substance

This is important, because this can be used for pressurizing natural gas. They could make alternative fueled vehicles with these kind of tanks on just about everthing, and save 1/2 on the fuel, for a selling point. There is a ad running, that says Los Angeles is running all their bus fleet on natural gas,the rest of the country, and school buses could be,too.

Thats besides offering compressed air cars as well. The price was 18 grand for a compressed air car.You just ran a compressor in your home garage to fuel it up,which cost a couple dollars in electricity to run it.It was showcased on "Beyond 2000",on the discovery channel ,I think it was....

I ve really felt that the way to go was full sized motorcycle engines in small cars, made easy enough to replace the engine with a rebuilt, after it wore out, something like the pacer and gremlin size body style.

I had a 1960Greenbriar,with the corvair 4 cyl engine, kind of like a american vw mini bus,it was good and economical/Chevy.

Ive been doing 4 leaf clovers with Health and Longlife Resource pgs for charity fundraisers /freelance charity work, the past 22 yrs on the side.I sent the Detroit area institutions a half a million dollars in stock over that same time span. They legalized casino gambling there, thay always had horserace gambling, then they added the lottery...Maybe they need to quit giving out so much in tax breaks...

Not so much as "overspent" as "refused to accept a new paradigm".

Way too many people retiring at age 45 with 100% pensions, a tremendously eroded tax base, and a union mindset fighting reform every step of the way.

Other cities lost their major industries and reinvented themselves. Detroit, by contrast, went full-vettebigot and assumed nothing had changed since the fifties, while things crumbled around them.

That'll probably start with AJ tomorrow morning sometime, depending on what time Mickey Gilley's show in Branson ends tonight.

My opinion. They avoided (then current) problems by putting off the problems to the future when the policy makers won't even be around.

I agree with you.

I ask you politely. Is there anything different going on now?

Nope, we're in uncharted territory. According to the NY Times, the bankruptcy judge has limited control over allocations, and Detroit's government has indicated it plans to treat gold parachute pensions on par with secured bonds.

It will be interesting to watch how this plays out.

Another piece of Intell is :Back in 1980,I saw a article in the Miami Herald saying they found enough Iron in the mountains of S America to last the whole world for 300 yrs.
They just need to invest in it,mine it out,and have it shipped up there, where they can turn it into whatever, making many times their investment on it,instead of relying on junk autos recycling for the auto trade.

Also making iron rails for light rail systems,...

What makes me sad is they are probably gonna sell everything I the DIA. One of the best art collections in the world...

Of course the Coloreds burning and looting and maurading

Didn't help

I don't why it makes you sad. The art will go to galleries that can afford it which means more people can see it. Making it more personal.... If you can't afford hamburger why are hanging onto caviar?

Another meditation I have is museums making guided tour DVD s to sell, and help with the running costs of the institutions, museums, zoos, any tourist spots.

they should be selling them on the internet.Offering said products for sale to libraries, selling them thru catalogs and bookstores,rentals....A cheap field trip for public schools, without having to leave the school....

I had the same idea yrs back on guided tourbus tours for all major cities, points of interest, history, entertainment, including Detroit, also sales of such out at major airports too...

A few yrs back I was telling the local ABC newsteam, they should be telling the folks over at the NASCAR museum to give people a 2 for and put museum replicas in among the car stuff ,over in Charlotte,NC .

I said I put museumreplicas.com in my health and longlife resource pgs among other things. They could get stuff to double up the interest in the nascar museum with stuff like that, for eye candy.

I suggested the newsteam had the wherewithall to put such a guided tour type of dvd together, incl archival footage, for a charity fundraiser for the City...

I also suggested the retaurants inside there as part of a way to support the place.Maybe you ve seen where some theme restaurants have cut up cars to make booths...

I sent maybe 300 grand of my 4 leaf clovers as charity fundraisers to ABC news over 20 yrs, saying put them on consignment anywhere they would sell them ,like tourist spots, country club golf pro shops,airports....
