Fitchburg woman charged with throwing hatchet at her boyfriend
A near-miss with a camping hatchet led to a reckless endangerment charge Thursday against a Fitchburg woman who allegedly threw the ax at her boyfriend.
According to a criminal complaint, Brenda F. Williams, 48, threw the hatchet at Donald McCants on Tuesday morning at their Smithfield Drive apartment after he tossed a lighter at her while they were "bantering." The two have lived together for 19 years, the complaint states.
The blunt side of the hatchet struck McCants on the chest, then fell to the floor.
"She could have killed me," McCants told police, according to the complaint.
McCants' brother, Lester McCants, who was in the room at the time, told police that his brother was lucky not to have been killed, and said he couldn't believe Williams threw the hatchet, the complaint states.
Williams, who was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, was released from jail on a signature bond after appearing in court on Thursday.
