Anyone want to join me on the beach?

It's a great diet for the heart by the way.

South Beach Diet is very similar to the ADA's Diabetic Diet. After getting off a Diabetic Med that caused a lot of weight gain, I have been following the ADA diet which isn't so much of a diet in the typical sense, but in watching combinations and glycemic factors. I'm down 30 so far. I think you will be very pleased with the results you will have. Best of luck!

I have been eating on this plan for over a year - hence the 44 pounds lost. I "lead" a team on Sparks right now and have tons of recipes there so pm me if you want a link - don't have to join (and no fees with Sparks) to peruse the threads. Also a great place to track your food if you need to.

What's the link?

I've been on it steadily for a month now. After the initial withdrawal period, I'm loving it. It's really good for my blood sugar, and since I'm predisposed to diabetes later, I'm trying to really get that under control now. I've always had a really really hard time losing weight (stupid PCOS!), so I'm hoping making this a permanent change the rest of my life will change that.

They say it is better to start a change in behavior in the middle of the week anyway. The chances of being successful increase quite a bit!

No doubt this is true.

Monday is always the busiest day at my regular gym. And January - geez, January is for the birds. You can't find a locker to save your soul, especially on Mondays. I'm so freaking glad that all the pushovers have given up on their "I want to lose 50 pounds and become a hunk who won't get sand kicked in his face" resolutions. Sure, it sounds selfish but the fact is plain for anyone to see: people who make resolutions such as getting more fit based on a calendar date instead of a real gut-check I've reached bottom kind of decision fade away very quickly.

I have time for one post and this is it.

Good on ya!!! Prevention, or at the very least, putting off a disease like diabetes for as long as you can, is the best thing you can do for yourself. And the fastest way to bring on diabetes is by being overweight.

I take care of diabetics and I see all the bad that results from it.

There is no other better reason to lose or keep off weight than this is. Again, Good for you!!!

I've been on the SBD for about a month. Deviated a little last weekend because of oral surgery and having to eat whatever I could keep down, but overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I've lost about 15lbs so far. I'm currently working on a book of Phase 1 and 2 recipes that I'd be happy to share once it's finished.

Hi WriterDom,

Just popping in to wave my encouragement!

Having heart disease in my house has forced me to really examine how I eat (or cook for the family). Speaking from the experience of nursing a (previously overweight) loved one through bypass surgery, I'm all for helping anyone to reduce weight through better diets. You do not want to have heart surgery.

One caution, though: avoid prepared meals (i.e. frozen dinners, including the South Beach ones). Each meal has way more sodium than is recommended for a whole day's worth of eating.

While I haven't looked at the Sparks site yet, what really worked for us was to keep a log for a week of what we were eating. I just made up a spreadsheet with columns listing the big offenders (calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium etc and the things we don't get enough of like Calcium, fiber, protein). It really only took a week of looking at how we were eating to make us naturally adopt a more healthful eating style. Which is not to say it wasn't easy to adopt better eating habits - but at least we think before we choose to eat the bad thing. And we read labels with more fervor than the religious.

And you know, you should check in to this thread each week...maybe on Wednesdays, and report on your progress. It helps if you have to account to others.
Good luck to you!

Weighed in today and I've lost another 5lbs in two weeks. All I've done so far is change my eating habits, although I am shopping for an exercise bike. Definitely stick with it, WD. It's worth it to see the needle fall. I broke down a few weeks ago and decided that I was too tired of avoiding my reflection in the mirror to continue the way things were, and that's what jump-started all this. If you ever need moral support, PM me. I'm up for it.

I've lost 8 so far. Once it gets a little warmer I can get my activity level up. I hate exercise machines.

It works

Mrs and I started doing it few months ago I hated the first part but all in all Im down about 25lbs and once you learn from it its not too bad at all good luck with it

I'm slightly discouraged at the moment with this thing, because even though I feel like my blood sugar and all is under better control, I'm not losing any weight! I've only lost two pounds in the almost two months I've been on this, even though I swear I haven't cheated. My exercise has increased, too, due to some work changes. I know I'm healthier, but it's disappointing to not see a decrease in the number on the scale.
