So I have this story idea...Now what?

The damn thing is stuck Right There, somewhere between vacation fantasies and an analysis of long-term market trends.

I can't forget it and I can't seem to deep file it for later review.

Now what?

If I thought I could just write it down I'd be right on it. But, I like structure, form, a process. I'm half Russian (by way of Latvia) and as they say in the movies..."the Russians don't take a dump without a plan."

What works? What cramps your brain, and what do I do about this damn story?

Hints, suggestions, alcohol, websites, and drugs all gratefully accepted.

Well, if you're wanting to write the story yourself, but need structure, you can begin by drawing up a detailed outline of exactly what will happen and when and who all the characters will be. That ought to give you the structure that you're needing so that you can write it.

If, on the other hand, you don't want to write it yourself, you can find an author who writes with a style that you like and ask them if they'd write it up for you to help you get it out of your head.

I have faced the same situation many times writing about celebrities and other troll-prone subjects. I'll share with you my tried and true formula. Research your subject first, develop it, and let it grow in your mind until it becomes overwhelmingly real. At the same time fasten onto core ideas and keep them in mind- these will be your story's key moments. Write them down. Then develop them. Connect them. Illustrate them. Do an outline, then a story. Hopefully you will come up with something great. If you must convince yourself it is great, look for proof in yourself, life around you, and the words of your friends. And never, never- unless it is truly warranted- lose faith in your vision or yourself.

Best of luck.

Sit down and start typing Lady_Kit.

Don't worry about where to start, how long it should be or anything like that. Sometimes that works for me.

Others, I have to think about, visualise the whole thing; characters, dialogue and action before I start to write.

A couple of times, I've roleplayed over IM.

Whatever works.

I like the idea of an outline, thats the way I structure my business documents. For some reason it didn't seem appropriate to approach a story in the same way. Not "creative" enough.

I do want to write the story myself, that much I know.

Thanks for the suggestions!

So if I take the outline idea, use the key moments as my bullet points and fill in along the way...sounds doable.

The faith, thats the hard part.

Thank you!

I thought about roleplay on the SRP, but wasn't sure I was ready to share the idea. Worse yet, have it not develop properly and flop.

Never done roleplay over IM. Sounds interesting.

Thanks for the ideas.

Its nice to find the time to be back. Don't know how long it will last but I plan to enjoy it while I can.

No problem. Tis part of my duty to help wonderful women named Kit. :D

See y'all again in three days. I got a funeral to attend (look at past posts for details). Later y'all.

I am totally disorganized. I get some rough idea of what the story is then dream up the characters. Then stick the characters in the story and let them tell it. Sometimes I'm surprised at what those perverts come up with.

Disorganized perverts...sounds like a bullet point, or a plot twist. Thanks!

Most welcome, M'Lady. *curtsies deeply*

The outline way don't work for me cuz I write my stories the way Jenny Jackson does...and idea, some characters, throw them together and let the fun begin. :D
