My opinion- a slut is a woman who doesn't use discretion in her dealings of a sexual nature. If she has an itch, she scratches it on the nearest post that stands still long enough. Typically, sluts are not necessarily the most cautious of souls- they may end up with unwanted pregnancies, diseases, and other consequences of reckless actions. And if you switch the pronoun, my opinion stands true for men as well (yes, you boys are just as slutty as us females).

Oddly enough- I've been called a slut since I was old enough to know what sex was. Not because I'm promiscuous or ever was- because I like people, and I flirt. (Like no one here guessed that.) There is a huge difference between being a slut and being called a slut.

And a ho... oooh. Skanky, nasty, will do anything sexual as long as there's something in it for them, dress like trash and usually smell like it, unkempt, uncouth and unpleasant. Yeah, hos make my skin crawl.

Thank gods all my friends are sluts or wannabe sluts.

Not dress... I'm thinking, and not one-to-one 'dirty talk'. A foul mouth can be slutty and it can be funny. In the East End of London, where swearing is a 'badge of honor', I remember being in a supermarket and a 'blousily dressed' (tits hanging out) woman turning and saying 'Marigold, you little cunt, put the fucking sweets down.' Marigold was about eight and dressed like sixteen. Was 'mum' a slut? Probably, I didn't stay around to find out.

I equate sluttyness with liasons, someone who changes partners as often as they change knickers - if they are wearing any.

Well, the original incarnation of the word restricted it to women, and had (per Merriam-Webster) connotations of slovenliness, prostitution, or just plan "sauciness" (FTF, maybe that one was you )

In modern usage it tends to apply to anyone who "overindulges" in something, especially someone who will do whatever it takes to get that particular thing -- sort along FTF's "anything to scratch an itch" idea. I've heard people refer to themselves and others as "cuddlesluts", "chocolate sluts", "booksluts", etc. While it's still mostly women to whom the term applies, it is used for both genders, and is widely used among gay men (at least among those I know, and those I've observed.)

It is still used as a perjorative term in most cases, implying that someone is of reduced or nonexistant sexual/moral standards. Much like "bitch", the meaning can be very contextual.

Personally? I don't use the term in a perjorative sense, so a slut to me is just someone I want to tease about his/her choices, be it books or bedpartners. If I want to be judgemental about someone's sexual activity, I'd be more likely to say they show a lack of taste.

First caller: "Hello?"

DJ: "Hi! What's your name?"

(Seriously, my answer would be, "It depends on what the word denotes and connotes to you." The determination of which, of course, is the purpose of this thread. )

And there's only just so many women available, since a player won't sleep with a "dog" or a "fat chick" and he has to have standards, or he's just desperate...but not slutty. Never slutty.

I love taking double standards to their inevitably stupid conclusions.

It's often amazing how much our thinking is influenced by assumptions and beliefs we are not consious of having. That's why I enjoy digging into words and phrases people toss off casually -- including those from my own lips -- and pulling them like taffy to see what they really are.

And every once in a while you get to see someone's brain snap back in their head like a b-b in a rubber band. You just can't pay money for moments like that

Never made sense to me. A girl dresses in fishnets and short skirt she is some who different then a girl in an ankle lenght skirt and sweater. In college I had a good female friend who's bed was seldom empty. She never thought of herself as a slut. She was in control and did it because it was fun. I would call her a stud and we would laugh about it.

I don't think my friend who shakes her ass at the strip club is any more a slut then my friend who is sleeps around and goes back to her law firm the next day.

I like to think that the suttish quality comes from the indiscreminate "ho" factor. I could easily fall for a woman who had several hundred partners if those men were all wealthy, powerful, etc. It when I find out she sucked a cock for a bag of chips that she is no longer attractive.

Or maybe not even so much the reason as her motivation. I have a thing for femme fatales, those women who are "man eaters" who rise above the names of bitch and slut to do as they please, and society be damned. She does as she pleases when she pleases, because she can. In that sense the slut (to my thinking flawed as it is) is not focused on who she is with so much as she just wants the feeling, "any port in a storm" rather than 'I want that man there and he will be mine"

I tend to think of the word more in terms of behavior than in terms of dress or language. A slut is someone with a clear lack of standards about sexual liasons.

And yes, someone who is a particular type of slut is indiscriminate about who or what he/she will do to get something, whether it's an advanced copy of the BAE anthology or 300 thread count sheets. That type of slut may also be indiscriminate about the quality of the object feeding the addiction, i.e. pulp paperbacks for the bookslut, Palmer's hearts for the chocolateslut.

I'm a slut. Yes I am, and guess what, I'm very happy with that, proud even. But, I am NOT promiscuous.
