I appeal to the knowledgeable denizens of the AH--help this ignorant child out, please!

Some time back a pop culture-savvy friend of mine explained to me the concept of slash fiction as fanfiction wherein writers create stories based on extant novels, TV shows, etc., and portray characters who are straight in the cannon having gay relationships, the classic example being Kirk and Spock of Star Trek getting it on.

I don't write fanfic, but just about every time I have a gay element in a story, someone calls it slash, and on the NaNo erotic boards, person after person posted saying, "I'm writing slash..." but usually the novel in progress was gay themed with no fanfic element.

Confused (as usual) I looked up the definition in the great oracle, Wikipedia:

Slash Fiction

I didn't see anything about all non-hetero fiction falling under the slash heading.

So, what's the deal? Has the term slash fic come to stand for all gay erotica? Or are people just throwing this term around willy nilly?

The children of the internet are reinventing the wheel
They seem to think they invented gay sex stories.
They have invented new names for everything. What we used to call "writing exercises" they call "drabble" and instead of keeping it in their journals they post it all on the internet.

They also are reinventing punctuation- where you or I would use quotes or italics to deliniate a thought, they like to use slashes. In some cases they use arrow tags, and if the site is HTML sensitive, the quote simply dissapears.

Don't get me started! :D

That was right after they invented gay sex, right?

What is Slash fiction other than horror - if they did not prove it? Do they even know? :d PS: Wikipedia is not a good resource.

I was under the impression that slash referred to all m/m stories based on fictional characters. Also, there's RPS(real person slash) which I gather is stories written about actors or celebrities not in character. I would say gay erotica that isn't slash is original fiction, yes?

Apparently, with all the new-fangled inventions like gay sex and gay fiction they're coming up with on the internet these days, slash means both horror and m/m fanfic erotica, and maybe, just maybe f/f fanfic erotica, and now perhaps even queer porn of all stripes. I hear it's all in the "/."
Proofs notwithstanding, what they know remains a scientific connundrum.

Well, yes. They're very creative and they made it all up, there in their wild imaginations and virtual reality land. You didn't really think guys actually did that did you?

They also invented sadists and masochists. Clever folk. ;)

Yes it is. For confusion.

This deserves its very own thread, bound to spiral to infinity with lengthy discussions about the merits and drawbacks of centralized and decentralized information, but I'm too busy trying to put into words mental images of men sucking each other off to be bothered.

I'm just really really grateful for that clitoris invention they came up with! When I think of what that's meant for my quality of life...

I don't even try to keep up.

I just write what pops into my twisted little mind and hope my readers like it.

Who give a flying fuck about labels anyhow? ;)

You could stick labels on me if you want, Rob.

Oooh.

You're developing a lovely kinky side to go with your BDSM stories, aren't you?

How delicious.

My understanding of slash was any relationship which was not supported by the canon, which normally made it same sex. Most canon makes clear the gang is all straight, so that is why slash is almost aways gayfic.

The most popular slash is almost always m/m. And almost always written by chicks.

For the record, well-written slash is a turn-on for me. Give me two hot male characters from a show and have them hook up? Whooo boy! And since one of my fave fantasies is two straight men (or formerly straight) falling in love...

Unfortunately Slash is starting to refer to all M/M erotic/romantic fiction.

Yep, nothing beats Lovecraft slash roleplaying.

We're watching Fifth Element right now - too fun with alcohol!

I just watched a very bad kung fu flick. It was fun.

To keep in the spirit of this thread, I recently came up with a good idea for a fanfic story. I caught Sky High a couple of weeks ago, and a very cool idea has been crystalising ever since.
