Fanfiction finally getting public notice!

A very interesting thread. Seems to be a lot of disagreements here. Stirs a lot of emotion. A good thing for authors. It erases writer's block quite often. I speak from a technical writing point of view becaus I'm an engineer, not yet a writer of fiction of any kind.

But I read some fanfic, and I like a lot of it. As in any genre, there are good writers and bad. I never finish a story written by an author that doesn't write well. I'm currently reading one of Falling to Fly's stories posted on fanfic (under a different pen name), and it is good.

I've read Star Trek, I've read some of Harry Potter, I've read some that didn't claim to be fanfic, but were, and I find them to be excellent when I want to escape reality without getting drunk as a coot.

it just bothered me to be reading something that didn't really happen.

Are you saying 'fiction' bothers you? Fiction didn't really happen, by definition.
