Yeah...you know what I'm talkin about...those songs that are so oozing with saccharine that one can almost become sick from sugar overload.

But we do love them...those silly little love songs.

They touch our hearts...remind us of loves lost or never known...if only....

I was listening to one this evening. Soon I found myself in tears.

I'm Leaving On A Jetplane by John Denver.

What's your silly little love song?

I have many........

Hmmmm... no takers yet?

Another....

Closer by Seals and Croft.

The line will always ring in my heart...I've given you my all, there's no more to borrow....

*tingles*

Standing On the Moon--- Grateful Dead

"....Standing on the moon, a lovely view of heaven...but I'd rather be with you..."

A melancholy love song, but sometimes that's just what you need.

JESSE (Janis Ian)

Roberta Flack - 1973

Jesse, come home, there's a hole in the bed Where we slept, now it's growing cold Jesse, your face and the place where we lay By the hearth, all apart, it hangs on my heart And I'm leaving the light on the stairs No, I'm not scared -- I wait for you

Hey Jesse, it's lonely, come home

Jesse, the stairs and the hall, recalling Your step, and I remember too All the pictures are shaded and fading in gray And I still set a place at the table at noon And I'm leaving the light on the stairs No, I'm not scared -- I wait for you

Hey Jesse, it's lonely, come home

Jesse, the spread on the bed, it's like When you left, I kept it for you All the blues and the greens have been recently cleaned And are seemingly new -- Hey Jess, me and you Will swallow the light on the stairs I'll fix up my hair, we'll sleep unaware

Hey Jesse, it's lonely, come home

Catch the version by Peter, Paul and Mary. However, wait until there's a water shortage in your area and listen to it in the back yard.

My first grade teacher used to play it for us in 1970 during our "nap" sessions....

Gordon Lightfoot--- If you could Read My Mind

makes me stop what ever I am doing....and often I cannot function for a time after I hear it.

I think it is probably one of the most beautiful love songs ever written.

I don't think love songs are silly. Ever.

Love changes lives. Love inspires. Love creates.

John teased Paul about his "silly love songs." But it was tongue in cheek. As John himself said, All You Need Is Love.

Okay, stepping down from the soapbox...

Sweet Child O' Mine has great meaning to me.

Top of the World by the Carpenters.

If by Bread.

Something by the Beatles.

I agree with you there about your soapbox rant :)
Top of the world was stuck in my head the other day,I was thinking about my SO, and singing it in the middle of the supermarket *blushes*
How about Air Supply songs?

The Uniques, were an almost famous regional (SW USA) group that had some near-misses back in the '60's, but never managed the leap into the national big time. They survived the early Beatles onslaught, but were washed away by the "hippie" music of the late sixties. The group's lead singer, Joe Stampley, pulled a Kenny Rogers and switched to country music.

Their signature song was a version of Art Neville's love ballad, "All These Things," so erotically potent it may still hold the unofficial record for instigating unplanned pregnancies.

Harry Connick, Jr., Elvis Costello and others have "covered" the tune.

Here's a link to an audio clip on YouTube followed by a copy of the lyrics.

All These Things

The touch of your lips next to mine
Gets me excited, makes me feel fine.
I've got it bad, but that's alright.
Long as your near me every night.

Your love's so warm and tender.
Your thrill is so devine.
It is, All These Things,
That make you mine.

If you would leave me, I surely would die.
When you started to go, I started to cry.
Now I've got it bad, but that's alright.
Long as you're near me every night.

Your love's so warm and tender.
Your thrill is so divine.
It is, All These Things,
That make you mine.

...Music Break...

Your love's so warm and tender.
Your thrill is so divine.
It is, All These Things,
That make you mine.

Bryan Adams - I think about you.

The Fiance played me that very early on in our relationship... it has special memories for me.

Sam Cooke - You are the Sunshine of my life

I played that to him :)

The first one that popped into my head was Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life"

Friendly Persuasion by Pat Boone

Thee I love, more than the meadow so green and still
More than the mulberries on the hill
More than the buds on the May apple tree, I love thee

Arms have I, strong as the oak, for this occasion
Lips have I, to kiss thee, too, in friendly persuasion

Thee is mine, though I don't know many words of praise
Thee pleasures me in a hundred ways
Put on your bonnet, your cape, and your glove
And come with me, for thee I love

Thee is mine, though I don't know many words of praise
Thee pleasures me in a hundred ways
Put on your bonnet, your cape, and your glove
And come with me, for thee I love

depeche mode - - - enjoy the silence

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

First Time Ever I Saw Your Face sung by Roberta Flack

Not really a syrupy love song to me, but rather a very senuous song

Into the Mystic by Van Morrison and You'll Accompany Me by Bob Seger are two that make me sigh each and every time I hear them.

Change the World by Eric Clapton
Down on Bended Knee by Boys to Men
To this day I have to sing when Boys to Men is playing. I thought I could be a singer as a kid and listened to their tapes constantly to get the sound right. I can't believe I just admitted that.

Last but not least
If I Were Gay by Stephen Lynch :p

These may not be overloaded on sugar, but they stop me every time.

Julia - Beatles
I Will - Beatles

Skullcrusher Mountain by Jonathan Coulton

It makes me smile and wipe a tear every time.

Two I wanted to share I found for my daughter's CD. Both made me bawl my eyes out.

Backstreet Boys- Never Gone

I really miss you, there's something I gotta say

The things we did, the things we said
Keep comin' back in me and make me smile again
You showed me how to face the truth
Everything that's good in me I owe to you

Though the distance that's between us
Now may seem to be too far
It will never separate us
Deep inside, I know you are

Chorus:
Never gone, never far
In my heart is where you are
Always close, everyday
Every step along the way
Even though for now we've got to say goodbye
I know you would be forever in my life (yeah)
Never gone

No, no, no, no

I walk along these empty streets
There is not a second you're not here with me
The love you gave, the grace you've shown
Will always give me strength and be my cornerstone

(Somehow) somehow you found a way
To see the best I have in me
As long as time goes on
I swear to you that you will be

Chorus:
Never gone, never far
In my heart is where you are
Always close (always close), everyday (everyday yeah)
Every step along the way
Even though for now we've got to say goodbye
I know you would be forever in my life (in my life, yeah)

Never gone (gone from me)
If there's one thing I believe (I believe)
I will see you somewhere down the road again
(I will see you somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere)

(Never gone) Never gone, never far
In my heart is where you are
Always close (always close, always close), everyday (everyday, everyday)
Every step along the way
Even though for now we've got to say goodbye (yeah, yeah)
I know you would be forever in my life

Never gone, never far
In my heart is where you are (in my heart is where you are)
Always close (always close), everyday (everyday)
Every step along the way

Never gone, never far
In my heart is where you are

And

Steve Kerwin "My Little Girl"

From the moment I first held you
And rocked you to sleep
In my heart I knew
A child is never yours to keep
I knew one day you'd learn to fly
But I never dreamed what I'd feel inside

As I dance the last dance
With my little girl
And the first with the woman
Who's found her place in the world
I see the woman in you
But for my whole life through
You'll always be my little girl

You wrapped me 'round your finger
Your smile made me melt
I wished so many times
I would've told you what I felt
From your first steps
to sweet sixteen
The rush of memories
feels like a dream

As I dance the last dance
With my little girl
And the first with the woman
Who's found her place in the world
I see the woman in you
But for my whole life through
You'll always be my little girl

I see the woman in you
But for my whole life through
You'll always be my little girl
