Silicone Lube & Silicone Toys

This is not entirely a BDSM-related question, but I hardly ever venture out of this corner of Lit, so I thought I'd ask here. I recently ordered some silicone lube when I placed an order for some new toys. (The local toy store carries nothing but cheaply-made, overpriced vibrators and dildos and really cheesy porn.) I hate, hate, hate water-based lube because it breaks down so quickly. And any kind of oil/grease? Ugh, my skin's greasy enough as it is, thank you very much. Anyway, I decided to give the stuff a try (especially since I only liked a few dollars on my order to get free shipping, LOL). I know you're not supposed to use silicone lube with silicone toys. Can anyone tell me why? I mean, what does it do to the toys? (I tried to do a search on this, but couldn't really find anything other than "Just don't do it.") Some of my dildos are silicone, but I have plenty of rubber/latex toys, so if all else fails, I can use my new lube with the other toys and water-based with the silicone ones. Thanks, y'all. :)

It is not recommended due to the chances of a chemical reaction between the 2 silicones which can cause the lubricant to bond to the silicone toy, thus rendering it unwashable and stuck there in a gooey mess for eternity. It doesn't always happen apparently because it is reliant on the type of silicones involved and their chemical make up. It is recommended if you want to use them together to do a patch test at the base of a dildoe or whatever toy you are using to see if there is going to be a problem. Aparently if it is going to bond, it happens immediately they come in contact with each other. Oh also I read somewhere that silicone lubricant will not wash out of sheets etc., because they cannot be broken down by water, and they taste bad.

Thanks, cat, that's what I was looking for. I'll do a patch-test when the stuff gets here. Oh, and I appreciate the tip about the sheets. I have some lovely (cheap) satin sheets, and I'd be beyond grumpy if I got icky non-washable lube all over them. I'll break out some of the older sheets when I use the stuff. :rose:

Good idea with the sheets. We bought some silicone lube about a year ago and did use it once or twice, but from memory we didn't like the feel of it for some reason. Maybe I should test it out again as these days I seem to be allergic to just about anything else unless I can wash it off thoroughly within 15-20 minutes. Have fun slippin' and slidin'. :D

If you're willing to reconsider a new lube, try Liquid Silk

It's what I use.

It's water based, with enough silicone that it's super slick and doesn't 'wear down' as you put it. It's also a small enough amount of silicone that you CAN use it with silicone toys... AND it does something to fight yeast infection, wtf? But, anyways, I LOVE THIS LUBE.

We've never had a problem with silicone lube getting on fabrics. I'm sure it can stain some fabrics like silk, but it definitely washes out of most with soap and warm water.

Make sure you do a test with the rubber toys, too, as they can contain silicone even if they're listed as rubber or something else. Cyberskin and they like will usually melt with silicone lube (or sometimes when it sits against something else that contains silicone).

Otherwise, enjoy! If you like it, this is an incredible deal - a pint for $20, and we're only about halfway through it after well over a year of heavy use!

Cat, you may want to try different kinds of lube, as they can feel differently. Ours feels silky, and we don't use anything else. If nothing else, it makes a great massage oil and is fantastic in the shower/water. It's definitely one of the few types of lube that irritates me.

Totally off the subject but then again not really. I have to use lube for some toys, but why can't the makes of the lubes make it smell better?? I might even say the same for some toys too. I have an extremely good sense of smell and and some of the lubes and toys I smell offend it.

not much to add, except to say that i looooooove silicone lube. it's the only sort of lube we ever use (the rare times we use lube), because it's the only kind i don't have any adverse physical reaction to, as well as the only kind that's long lasting and really effective for our needs. the taste is terrible true, but that's not really relevant in our situation.

I'm glad you and cat mentioned that, osg. About silicone lube not giving adverse reactions, I mean. If we use any kind of lube, I'm all itchy and irritated if I don't go wash it off immediately. Maybe this means if we use this stuff, I won't have to jump up and run for the bathroom as soon as he finishes with me. :nana:

What kind and brand of lube is it? Our silicone doesn't smell at all, and only has a slightly salty flavor.

I think it was Wet brand. She bought it and we used it. I know for the toys I have I have KY and that doesn't seem to have the same issues. But then the toys are rubber and still have a strong smell.

Ok, I got the stuff today. Hope I get to use it sometime soon.

LOL, nice to know I am not the only one...we only use it when we are into handwork, never for sex, but the damn stuff always makes me itch, even the non-allergenic one I bought loads of in Oz because it didn't seem to have that reaction. Guess this is one of the downsides of getting older....everything seems to irritate the skin in some ways and sometimes it just gets irritated for the sake of doing so!!
